that's a good example of stats not reflecting the actual game. anyone who watched the game knows that our offense was still painfully inefficient. I do appreciate:

1) Gilbert not running back and forth
2) WR play was much better than last year

I do not appreciate:
1) Bad play calling. (can we just knock it off with the screen pass?)
2) Horrible clock management.

The screen pass that worked almost every time was the one play that all the Tech fans around me were complaining about because it was working.

All I have read today is vitriol towards June and an assessment that the offense is the same approach as the last five years. Seriously? 93 plays vs. 70 from last year? 490 yards of total offense against a Big XII defense versus an average of 367 last year? 63% completion percentage for Gilbert as opposed to last year's 53%? A hurry up, quick tempo offense as compared to calling the quarterback over after every play? Playing numerous receivers versus sticking with four throughout the game? Come on, guys...open your eyes.

Excellent points. Beside Baker Mayfield playing well, TT defense was one of best in Big XII last year and didn't have many loses to graduation.

Reality:

The freshman is pretty good, and showed why he won the starting job over the scholarship kid. Yes, he had a good day. He also had big, very athletic o-line that looked like they had played together before (although our defense got through a few times) and some really good receivers.

You make it sound like Kingsbury is some novice graduate assistant. The reason he got the job there might have something to do with the fact that he played at TT, but also because it appears he's a damn good coach. They promote coordinators to head coaches for a reason. Maybe they made a good hire, because maybe he really does know what he's doing.

We had 3 new offensive linemen, WRs who we have to admit didn't have a great year last year and Gilbert all running an offense that looked a lot different than what we saw last year.

But cue the hate from those who were going to complain even if GG threw for nearly 400 yards and the offense put up nearly 500 (without the starting RB for most of the second half) on a BCS defense the first time out.

Ok, it was an improvement.

GG was better than he was last year; still has recognition and accuracy issues but last year he was horrible to start the season. Last night I thought he was accurate on more than 50% of his throws whereas last year he was more like 33%

Kliff already had a Texas Top 100 QB in his class (don't think June has ever had one of those). Bottom line is June went across the country to get a QB no one else wanted when there was a better option in his state.

I posted my positives from the game in the Silver Lining thread, but wanted to put on my Chief Black Cloud hat from the Sky is Falling Tribe. I decided not to post anything last night because I was in a very ugly mood and figured I couldn't be reasonable or fair.

My Black Clouds:

1. Drops. Catch the Damn Ball. These represent more first downs and keeps our D from getting worn out. At some point the coaching staff has to hold the WRs accountable and bench someone.

2. We didn't try to pressure Mayfield. We dropped 8 into coverage almost every play. We allowed him to to get comfortable and stay that way.

3. Tackling angles. We took some really poor angles at times and those missed tackles turned into first downs (and two TDs). This kept our D on the field to continue to get worn down. This is going to correct itself over time in game situations.

4. In 6 years I still haven't seen an effective two minute drill. The lack of energy, urgency at the end of the first half was disgraceful. JJ's inability to manage the clock and timeouts during that situation has always been a joke.

5. The lack of emotion/apathy by the players when the game was still in doubt. That is a leadership problem - both coaching staff and upper classmen share this burden. It reminds me of JJ's first year when the kids were expecting something to go wrong.

6. This OL is very vulnerable to the blitz at the moment. It is really a problem in the red zone were we cannot spread them out both horizontally and vertically. I think this will tighten up as the season moves forward.

7. Penalties, specifically personal fouls. We had two roughing the passer penalties and one unnecessary roughness penalty. The emphasis this season is protecting the players, especially the QB. Two of the calls were marginal, but knowing this mandate given to the officials - it is too many. Yes, the Refs hosed us a couple of times, but we have to play smarter.

8. Play calling with 6 minutes to go (when we turned it over on downs). We threw the ball quickly for 3 yard gains on 5 consecutive plays. We didn't even look to push the ball down field. This was puzzling to say the least. It would be one thing if these were check down passes, but these weren't.

Our offense used to put up huge numbers in the Tom Rossley days as well........

I saw some offensive improvement but I still say that JJ has had plenty of time to make us better than what we are at this point and time. I'm over him. He has done what we have paid him to do, gotten us better, but feel he has reached his prime here.

I do not think it is a huge stretch to say that some of his teams were better than some of our teams that have gone to bowls the last 4 years.

Rebel10 makes an excellent point. We are a BCS team too. The excuse of "they're a bcs team" is no long valid.

some thoughts garnered (and memories I will have) while watching the game with some non-partisan fans in Colorado:

1 Mr Johnson needs to catch the ball. No excuses.
2 "Holding, number 29"...it is football, bad things and calls happen...overcome.
3 Our RG and RT need to communicate...they were dominated throughout the game.
4 Absolutely no urgency...points were left on the field because of poor play/game management.
5 Mr Shead needs to hold on to the ball
6 Walk on QB for Tech played well enough, but there was no immediate pressure (blitz) on the first series...why?

on the plus side:

1 There was an attempt at a "Jumbo" package for short yardage near the goal line...that was encouraging to see that it was attempted and worked in a limited fashion.
2 We competed for three quarters. They still have better athletes, and we did not back down.
3 We may, MAY have a couple of DL that have got a bit of nasty in them...hopefully we will see more of this.
4 GG can run. Hope we see more of this.
