Who else believes this "Focus Group" consisted of 3 students and 10 athletic department marketing staff?

Are there 10 people working in athletic marketing? If so, the budget is bigger than I thought! (That's not a slam against the marketing staff -- I know they're busting their tails. They're just not given NEARLY the staff and budget and resources they need.)

And PK brings up a good point. We now can look forward to a FULL student section of young Mustangs wearing all this hip new gear, right?

RIGHT???

LOL You are right about marketing being underfunded. There may not be 10 people there! OK, so the focus group consisted of 10 of Copeland's friends, and 3 SMU students.

A logo is not going to make a difference in interest in the program...they ought to know that...

Maybe there ought to be more of an effort to get the students to the games...something like "Show up and you get one free hot dog"

We all know how students will go for food!

Newshound: I suspect you work in the AD Dept. at SMU. You've posted the same message on both this link and the one about 'Memo to the AD & Mktg. Dept.'. You're too +++++++ about this new look. I know for a fact that folks in the AD troll this site to see what the TRUE fans are saying. C'mon, fess up. And report what you're hearing here about the new 'look' to your supervisors! Tell 'em: WE AIN'T HAPPY! WE'RE MAD AS HELL AND WE'RE NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE!

Looking at the merchandise, I think it is clear what it is-generic corporate items and gifts. Anybody that has ever run a business has catalogs out the wazoo of the stuff. It could just as easily be the site for Joe Blow Mortgage Company as it is SMU. Put your logo on a paperweight; put your company name on a golf shirt to give out at the Christmas Party.

Want proof? Go to the website of Advanced-online, who runs the website. Yeah man, that is us with our peers: SMU, Sally Beauty Supply, Fujitsu and Bell helicopter.

And that is what is so upsetting-the lack of care or personality. I am sure the workers of Sally Beauty Supply are a loyal bunch, but it just is not the same. There are other companies that SMU athletics could partner with for an online store; some of which have university experience.

I will note that Advanced-online is a local company; it is quite possible the folks that run the place are SMU alums and truly care about SMU an dare not treating it like some title company in Cleveland. I don’t want to be too cruel. Something has to be done, however; changes have to be made.

Oh, and requiring an e-mail address to view the site is one of the cardinal sins of e-commerce.

Nice work, blog. And if you're a Mustang Club member, you also have to enter your Mustang Club membership number. Mike Standish, the company rep, says this is so MC members can get a 'discount'. Got news for you, Mike. I don't need a discount 'cause I ain't buyin' any of this crap.

Whoever Jim C aka Copeland hired / signed off on to do a new SMU logo
just copied Boise State's basically. I wonder if the same company did
both. I don't even think they changed the Bronco's orange out to
Mustang's bright red.

I've spent a few nights in Boise, Idaho, and its not much bigger than my
home town of Longview. If they ever change the 'rockin L' logo on the
Lobos' helmets, which came out my senior year, they'll be HELL to pay.

If I had the guts, I'd take out a second mortgage and invest in Flash and McCartney's. I have a feeling their sales are going to go way up.

If you go to this site full of college logos, you'll see probably a dozen or more that are very close to our new logo.

http://www.logoserver.com/College.html

Seems to be an SMU theme - afraid to be unique.

A quick scan shows that this logo bears a resemblance to the Arkon Zips, Boise State, Bucknell Bison, the Cal Poly SLO Mustangs (VERY SIMILAR!!!!!!!), Delaware State Hornets, Florida International Golden Panthers, George Washington Colonials, Georgia Southern Eagles, Morgan State Bears, New Jersey Lions, North Dakota State Bison & Western Michigan Broncos.

I don't have the ability to post a photo or scan an image. I'd appreciate it if someone would put up the Cal Poly SLO Mustangs logo for everyone to see. What a travesty!
