If I wasw the athletic director I would contact as many of the top high school football coaches in Texas and ask for their opinions of SMU and the football staff.

You would probably get a response like 'who'? One of the big issues with JJ and staff is that they do nothing to build relationships with Texas HS coaches in addition to not calling or following up on recruits.

It is not the number of recruiting classes that is needed. It is the quality of the class from top to bottom. Age of the offensive coaches is a problem. They are relying more on transfers to come in and be the players rather than recruiting and developing them. Their best days are behind them. More interested in not being late for their tee times in this stage of their lives. Priorities change as one gets middle-aged and above. Compare to Patterson who is never satisfied and is willing to play the part of the bad guy to keep the fires stoked with his players AND coaches. You're being way too logical.
Your point about our recruiting classes top to bottom is dead on. In a lot of these games against Big XII teams we stay with them for a half but then we wear down because we have no depth. JJ does hit on a few diamonds in the rough but when you build an entire team with these recruits, it's hard to compete with BCS teams.
