June may be mediocre as a recruiter but there is no denying that he motivates his players and puts them in a position to succeed. The last 4 season have been better than any 4 in 25 years at SMU. Ideally we can take that next step but enjoy the current success and don't take anything for granted.
Correct. I personally think Orsini hit the lotto with June Jones. After Orsini was turned down by every "name" coach available, we landed Jones because Jones had basically backed himself into a corner by delivering an ultimatum to U of Hawaii's administration. U of Hawaii called Jones' "bluff", and at that point he had to either stay and be a puppet or move on. And SMU, home of Jones' buddy Eric Dickerson, was the ONLY college gig that was still unfilled. An unbelievably lucky series of events where the stars aligned just perfectly for us.
I've never personally talked to June about this, and with his fondness for websites I doubt he'd ever talk to us about his true motivations for coming to SMU. But that's my take based on the evidence at hand.
So for those calling for June's head, I just thought I'd throw the cautionary "be careful what you wish for" point out there. I don't personally have a beef with Turner, but most of the folks who are calling for June's head also seem to be in the anti-Turner crowd. Turner (through AD Copeland) hired Mike Cavan and Phil Bennett, so what makes anyone think the next football coach will be a pigskin version of Larry B?
As for the June vs. Larry argument, if I had more free time on my hands, I'd love to go back through the old posts and pull some quotes from the PonyFans who were griping about the Larry Brown announcement and now think the man walks on water. I also seem to remember a bunch of folks who were pissed about Orsini not being able to land Jankovich for the head coaching job, so it's interesting to see how that turned out.
Believe me, I had more than my fill of people accosting me at work Tuesday morning about the Mustangs loss to Tech. So I'm not happy either. But the progress over the last 5 years is undeniable. So do we continue to progress, or do we take a flyer and hope that going a different direction would yield better or faster results? History does't indicate that will be the case.
