Montana State has been recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as one of 108 research universities with "very high research activity" since 2006. SMU achieved this designation, after Montana State, in 2011.

Being a state, public institution we have open enrollment for Montana kids - meaning if you can write your name, you can get in. But because of our rising academic profile and prestige in certain core areas (and relatively inexpensive tuition), we now have 60% non-resident enrollment.
Any kid who comes here and works hard will get a great value.
