Anyone concerned over what just happened?

Postby Rebel10 » Sat Sep 07, 2013 10:37 pm

I have concerns regarding just getting to 6 wins. Not saying that we will not make it but there is no reason to jump up and down over this win imo. We won in the last seconds and our D Line got handled a good amount of the time. I know the hard core JJ suporters are probably singing to song of everything is okay and we just need to tweak a few things but now the Rutgers game may not look so promising.

I'm not that concerned because this team is better than some of the teams we will face in conference play. I was legitimately nervous about losing this game. I don't think winning it is reason to celebrate, but from the moment we scheduled it, I thought this was the likely outcome. I wish we could blow out this team, but that's not where we are. Hopefully we keep improving throughout the season and in the coming seasons.

YEs. The D needs to vastly improve. That is our biggest concern right now. WE have difficulty tackling, stopping the pass and shutting down the run. Other than that, the D is OK.

Special teams have not been special. Yes, we got a huge TD on the punt return team. But we had a huge stupid penalty on a punt and our kickoff team hasn't been strong.

The O moves the ball but once again we have a disastrous time in the red zone. And how many stupid penalties could our O committee to insure a drive gets killed?

So we need to improve all areas of the Defense, cut out turnovers, cut down on penalties and imporve special team play. We have a lot of work to do over the next two weeks.

So after watching this game how many games do you think will we win this year?

You could say the same thing about Texas, at least SMU won a game it should have won, I doubt Texas will.

The defense got bullied at times. Bobcats just stole their milk money and pushed them into the mud.

I'm still thinking 6 or 7. Montana State, Memphis, Temple, UCONN, USF, and 1 or 2 of Houston/UCF/Rutgers. I don't think we are very good, but outside of Texas A&M no one on our schedule is very good. If the stars align we may even beat TCU. When our team is inspired it wins, when it is not it lays a dud.

That was the worse part about the game. When Rambo was in against TTU, our D held in there. With him out we just couldn't hang with them. I wonder how much of a difference a healthy Rambo would have made tonight.

Very concerned, we trailed most of the game and most snaps got mauled by a FCS team. We're looking like a 4-8 team, possibly worse if we continue to be a horrific road team.

Mustangxc, you are in clear denial. Wake up, we almost lost to an F....C....S... Football team and we got schooled all game except I guess the 4th quarter. This game I was praying would get June fired but based on the coaching staff by the locker rooms, "a win is a win and no one will remember in November. We can only hope for 3-4 wins. we might as well tell A&M we surrender. This is a wake up call to manage my and boosters that we need change more than ever.

If both the offense & defense lines keep getting pushed around, and the Mustangs don't clean up their stupid penalties, not many games. . . Having said that Montana St, UConn, Temple, USF, and maybe 1 more. . . Basically, a 4-5 win season. Leaning more to a 4 win season.

Nah, you guys are not giving MState the respect they are due. The defense looked like poo in this game so lets hope that gets better.

I think it is simple. As long as JJ is taking SMU to bowl games he is golden. When we start having loosing seasons then his job will begin to be in jeopardy. As of now, he is considered a big winner by SMU standards.

What we (on this board) want is 10+ wins a season. I don't think that concept turns the wheel at SMU. Moreover, just replacing Coach Jones with another fine coach does not necessarily mean progress. Winning 10+ is progress.

You'd think SMU going to as many bowl games as we have and as many back to back good seasons as we have had would put more fans in the seats. So, the question that bothers me is can SMU provide a program that will bring 40, 50 or 60 thousand fans to a game? Many of you feel recruiting is everything (and I agree it is one of the most important aspects of college football) but we handicap our program and our recruiting without that kind of fan base.

You can't force people to watch a piss-poor product. You can't. Outsiders who venture into the stadium walk away thinking they saw something sad. If we truly had the run-n-shoot or air-raid going, and we were putting up 40+ a game, winning wouldn't be as much of an issue. If it was fun, they might come back. The problem is that what you see is so much small-time garbage, unless you have a stake in SMU football (God help you), you won't have any interest coming back.

Someone is going to have to figure out how to make this team exciting with the mostly marginal-talent we have. JJ's system was supposed to be so dynamic, it would counter-act out lesser talent and keep us in games. Nope. Experiment failed. Someone is going to have to figure out how to maximize the strength of what we've got and get to 7+ wins consistently in our crap conference. If the offense is fun and game presentation is good, fans will start to come and come back. Meanwhile, we need to recruit like beasts and go after top talent...somehow get an occasional blue-chip. Then you get 8+ wins and more casual fans come. Now you're on most blue-chip radars as a Plan B or C but you are still recruiting hard, so you get more. 10+ wins...TCU-level.
