SMU Target(?) QB John Skelton6-5, 201 5.06 from El Paso Burgess tested at the Rivals Nike camp at Palo Alto California. Bench 185, squat 300 vertical 24. Quoted as stating "SMU is recruiting me probably the hardest." Scheduled for SMU's camp July 23 and thinks SMU might offer. No offers yet but interest in Ariz St, Ark, Texas Tech, Wisc, Army, UTEP, Col. Joe Sawyer is recruiting Skelton for SMU. Skelton says he haqs a strong arm but admits he has slow feet. BTW folks UTEP is showing up all over the board this year in Texas and players are mentioning them among those at the top of the list rather than just as an afterthought. UTEP rarely received much interest from Texas players in the past at least this early. CUSA maybe a real benefit to that program.
Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Elvis Grbac, Jay Fiedler -- no way they can crack 5.0 in the 40.
Chad Pennington, Eli Manning, Patrick Ramsey, Brian Griese -- maybe. (Mannings might be the slowest family in the country, now that Archie's not running around any more. That guy could motor a little bit.) No, I'm not suggesting that this guy will be the equal of any of those. But if he has other assets (height, arm strength, smarts, etc.), I'd be curious to learn more about him, and find out whether or not he can play.
Re: SMU Target(?) QB John Skelton
Hate to see a good arm without legs languish behind the current version of the SMU line.
The comparison with Elvis Grbac actually is a pretty good one. Skelton is tall and not very quick. He has a nice throwing motion, setting his feet quickly and releasing the ball pretty high in his delivery. His accuracy is pretty good, and his arm strength is better - he can get the ball downfield, often with decent accuracy. He's not going to run away from many defenders, but he's strong enough to fight off some smaller tacklers, and he seems to make good decisions. His senior year will determine whether he's just another guy or a "late bloomer" that lots of coaches start chasing.
