Are you saying that under the Mustang Mania marketing campaign, SMU purchased it's own tickets at face value and then gave them away?

True. I bought like 15 seats last year to get people in the stands and I couldn't give the things away.
So, how did Brad Thomas pull it off with Mustang Mania? I was at SMU during this period and we had the same product.

First there are 100 more options of things to do on a Saturday with just football alone not to mention other activities, and second, where are all of Brad's "fans" today? Coming to one game to support MD is not building a fan base forever. You have to give them something to come back to see that is better than the other things they can do. Again, I do not mind giving away tickets but that does not bring them into the stadium.

Re: AD Hart Should Give Away Tickets To Fill The Stands
My understanding is people pay big bucks to attend SMU. Why do they do that? They do that because they perceived the value of the experience they obtain from attending the most prestigious institution in Dallas worthwhile.
Maybe it worth it, maybe it isn't. But those attending and paying big bucks think it is.
If you good old boys start giving away free tickets by the bucket load, the perceived value of attending an SMU game is going to plummet. How long will the fat cats in the luxury boxes be willing to fork over golden coins for their prestigious vantage points?
Maybe it's not about money, I realize you folks have a pretty good sized stash of cash set up in an endowment. You could just raid that fund for money for tickets. I'm sure purchasing tickets for football games would be the kind of activity that would attract money from future donors. Go for it.
The fact is you guys have a decent football team. The few times I've seen them play on TV this year I generally enjoyed the games. If I was in Dallas I'd consider taking in a game. I already perceive that I can't afford to go to a Cowboys game, so they aren't even the competition. I would expect to pay any where from $25 to $60 for decent seats that I could afford. If I could purchase good tickets for $10 or God forbid, $3.99, my perceived value of the SMU football game day experience plummets before I hit the door. If my perceived value of SMU football drops low enough I might as well go to a high school football game.
Your competition is not the Dallas Cowboys and it's not the Trinity Knights. Tickets prices must reflect that.

There is a near unlimited amount of football to watch. Why go through the hassle of going to a game at SMU if you are not connected in some way?
We dont represent the local populace.
We dont offer a true top college football experience - games have the attendance of Allen HS most games and the place is a mosuleum.
We dont play top level football - we play teams nobody has heard of so we might as well be Div 2.
All the negatives of turning on a random game on TV with all the negatives of going to a game. Few positives.
There has to be a reason for people to come.

We need an opponent to say something derogatory about Dallas. Only if we are representing the city in a city-vs-city war will the rest of Dallas have even the slightest interest in our result

There are some really good comments and ideas here. I wonder if SMU has actually thought this through as much as you have?

NCAA regulates Complimentary Tickets
16.2.1.2 General Regulations. Complimentary admissions shall be provided only through a pass list for individuals designated by the student-athlete. "Hard tickets" shall not be issued. The institution shall be responsible for this administrative procedure, and the student-athlete’s eligibility shall be affected by involvement in action contrary to the provisions of Bylaws 16.2.1.1 and 16.2.2.1 (i.e., receipt of more than the permissible four complimentary admissions or the sale or the exchange of a complimentary admission for any item of value). (Revised: 1/11/94 effective 8/1/94)
16.2.1.2.1 Issuance Procedures. The individual utilizing the complimentary admission must present identification to the person supervising the use of the pass list at the admission gate. The individual then shall be provided a ticket stub or other identification of a specified reserved seat, directed to a specific reserved-seating section or seating area, or treated as a general-admission ticket holder. (Revised 11/1/01 effective 8/1/02)

We play a decent football program from the state of Texas who we have historical ties with (and we think we have a chance to beat going in) and we sell out and look at possibly breaking an attendance record.
We play a FCS school from Montana no ones ever heard of and the stadium is empty.
OH GOD OH GOD HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO SELL TICKETS?!
