Tom Mason, SMU defensive coordinator: "I have the worst job in America this week"

In devising a game plan to slow Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, SMU defensive coordinator Tom Mason has arrived at one conclusion.
"I have the worst job in America this week,’’ he said Monday.
Mason spent his rare Saturday without a game glued to the flat screen, watching Manziel go "Sharknado’’ on No. 1 Alabama _ throwing for 464 yards and rushing for 98 in a 49-42 loss.
The 562-yard performance against one of the best defenses only reinforced Mason’s belief that Manziel is virtually impossible to prepare for because of his ability to ad-lib under fire.
"He creates so much stuff with his feet, with his scrambling ability,’’ Mason said. "He’s got a real uncanny ability to throw the ball as he scrambles.
"It’s hard to really prepare for him. He’s going to get some on you, you have to try to minimize it by creating a turnover here or there. I think the worst thing you can do is change your (base) structure. You do what you do and see what happens."

Re: Tom Mason on Johnny Paycheck
Coach speak. Mason' is playing his cards close to the vest. Why would he say anything else? Of course he is going to say he is scared to panic playing the Money Badger. The guy is good! And he isn't going to say a word about anything he is devising to slow down the Money Badger.
A$M knows what we do. Mason knows that. So why would he say anything other than play what we play and just do the basics? Why tell A$M what to prepare for.

He needs to watch some episodes of Dirty Jobs.Tom Mason, SMU defensive coordinator: I have the worst job in America this week.
Re: Tom Mason on Johnny Paycheck
I would hope he considers this a fun week and the best job in the world for the next few days. A competitive coach would welcome the chance to try and stop the best player in the game.
Scheme the hell out of Saturday and throw everything you have at this one game and make a name for yourself, that's how I'd approach this game.

I dont like that at all - just say he is good and leave it at that. He used to gripe about Navy all day long and their cut blocks. Man up and deal with it.

It'll will be interesting (hopefully) to see what he has come up with defensively to pressure JM. Hopefully having 2 weeks off helped.
Re: Tom Mason on Johnny Paycheck
Watch the video. He said the same thing to PP, and he looked like he had a little smirk going. He looked like someone who loves this kind of game, but also is realistic enough to know that Manziel is a freak and A&M's offense is capable of putting up big numbers on any D in the country.

What would you guys have him say? "Manziel is no big deal and we will totally shut him down?" That would be a great way to provide bulletin board material and look foolish at the same time.

Re: Tom Mason on Johnny Paycheck
A big reason their passing attack is so good must be the A&M offensive line. They were awesome against Bama. It will be hard to penetrate. I hope Mason comes up with something.
