Have any of the current AAC teams or teams being added been ranked in the top 10 in football at the end of the season besides possibly Louisville in the last 10-15 years?

Actually, the SEC isn't that great. Does Kentucky's recent performance alone make it a great conference? The conference's NCAA bids are declining; five in 2011, four in 2012 and three bids last year (which they also did in 2009). How is that great?SMUfrat wrote:I sincerely appreciate you providing me that information. I should know better than to assume that Kentucky isn't the best example of how dominate SEC is.Take Kentucky away, the SEC is just as strong, or possibly even stronger.LA_Mustang wrote:Two years ago, Kentucky. Florida won in 2006 & 2007. Kentucky is preseason #1 and Florida #8. It's foolish to say SEC is not very good.
thanks. gracias. much appreciated.
BTW, Arkansas hasn't earned a bid since 2008 and LSU since 2009.

UCF (20th) and UH (14th) have Top 25 rankings recently

Obviously all "Bcs" conferences have well respected football members.SMUfrat wrote:So I was thinking about this:
I dont know of another FBS league with top notch basketball that doesnt have FBS football that is well respected.
So you are considering who...c-usa, mwc, mac,and sun belt? Who is the top notch basketball team out of that garbage heap?

I think what you're getting at Frat is the following:
If SMU imoroves dramatically in BB, so much so that we start getting even more publicity and we get into the tourney and suddenly, SMU becomes the cool team to root for in Dallas -- will that help with football visibility, recruiting, perception, etc?
I don't have an answer. It's usually the other way around - good football leads to better basketball teams ( see Oregon, Florida St, USC, etc).
But traditionally great bb programs don't always have great football -- Duke, Indiana, Illinois, Arizona, to name a few).

I see his point in that it might not work for a given team, but if the AAC is seen as a power conference in basketball, i.e. perennial top 5, then it might work in our favor to become a P5 conference in football because you either are or are not a P5 conference. If announcers tout us as a major player then we become a major player and it will help in recruiting for football.

The problem with this argument is all your examples are in major conferences.

Ok - let's take a non-P5 school:SMU2007 wrote:The problem with this argument is all your examples are in major conferences.
San Diego St. They have recently made some noise in BB and had some tournery success -- has that helped their football team? I would say NO.
Does Temple's success help football? Again, I'd say NO.

I agree with what you are saying... but... you have to ask yourself. If temple basketball was BAD... would they be in the AAC. poor football and bad bball? I wouldnt count Temple as a team with TONS of fans. I think Temple was in the right location, respectable basketball, and football (in MAC wasn't embaressing) so they joined a better league.ponyinNC wrote:Ok - let's take a non-P5 school:SMU2007 wrote:The problem with this argument is all your examples are in major conferences.

I think we were called up for location and football reasons. But basketball certainly improved. Our basketball counterparts - in the top3 or 4 leagues, makes it easier for our accomplishments in football to gain speed?
Idk. But the only thing that would hurt is if we are considered a "basketball school" and our FB isnt taken seriously.

Re: As a league: Can AAC FB improve with steller AAC BB?
I think having increased visibility - even if it is only for being known as a BB school - still helps our overall program and improves our place in the pecking order for realignment.
I would hope increased exposure for basketball would lead to better recruiting in football and more "brand recognition" overall. That would be my hope at least.
Better to be talked about, even if it's only for BB, than to be ignored! Every game on National TV is pretty huge compared to our old CUSA TV deal where we only appeared ONCE on National TV. And that was always against Memphis!

Well I agree with you. And whoever mentioned Arizona - as a younger guy, I didn't associate them with a basketball school, persay. But thats proof that beings a major stand-out in a sport is a big help. I think our goal is to have simultanious momentum in both sports, football and basketball. If we do this, we will be a hot commodity!ponyinNC wrote:I think having increased visibility - even if it is only for being known as a BB school - still helps our overall program and improves our place in the pecking order for realignment.

I would like to land Turner, win the NCAA tournament in 2015, and then see how it plays out on the football side.

Hope springs eternally, but better recruiting in FB requires more recruiting effort by the coaches.ponyinNC wrote:I would hope increased exposure for basketball would lead to better recruiting in football and more "brand recognition" overall. That would be my hope at least.

SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
