TCU QB James Battle - who took Denton Ryan High to the Class 4-A state title as a junior - may be transferring to Div. 1-AA Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX. From the DMN:
One of TCU's prized football recruits, James Battle, was released from his scholarship this week.
Battle, a sophomore quarterback from Denton Ryan, never played for the Horned Frogs and was listed as low as No. 4 on the depth chart.
Battle struggled with weight and personal issues in two seasons at TCU.
Battle, 6-1, 220 pounds, has a good arm with the ability to make defenders miss with his elusiveness. But his weight has cost him some speed.
He weighed 195 pounds his senior year of high school, but after his freshman season at TCU, he was 240 pounds. Battle also took care of his infant son and spent time in summer school. He was never in academic trouble, Denton Ryan coach Joey Florence said.
Battle could not be reached for comment.
Florence said Battle is considering several schools including Division I-AA Stephen F. Austin State. If Battle decides to transfer to the Nacogdoches, Texas, school, he could play this season.
Battle led Denton Ryan to consecutive state titles and was an all-state selection his senior year. He was considered the top recruit signed by TCU in 2003.
"He's a good kid," TCU coach Gary Patterson said. "We just got to the point where he couldn't get on the field. He had some personal issues he had to deal with, and it was hard to overcome a lot of them."
Patterson said Battle and several others were competing with Chad Huffman for the No. 2 spot at quarterback.

Sounds like he has a lot of things to deal with.
I wish him well.

He was a 4-star player in 2003 according to rivals. It also shows that he considered SMU. This guy should transfer to SMU, sit out a year, and then he would be in a perfect situation for a great battle for the qb pos. (Phillips, Willis, and Battle) I believe Willis also went to the same highschool as Battle.

Willis and Battle both went to the same high school. Would Battle be better off in a mentorship type position, keeping the QB position warm until Willis is ready?

So the "player to be named later" in the Derek Canine "trade" would be Willis? I'd be OK with that. But I'm guessing it's not likely.
How nice would it be to see him lead us to a win over the Froggies!

I seriously doubt TCU would ever release him from his scholarship to play for SMU. Most schools have the policy not to releasea player from a scholarship unless he's going to play for a school that the former school isn't scheduled to play.
I know that kept Shaud Williams from transferring to from Tech to TCU. He didn't like Leach's system (which makes sense for a RB), but Tech wouldn't release him to sign with us. Thats why he ended up at Alabama (where Fran was, who originally recruited him while at TCU).

Interesting that Leach DID release Foy Munlin to play for us. Maybe he just thought it wouldn't make any difference anyway, letting a kid go to SMU. Man, I wish we had scored a couple more TD's against them last year.
