Th Best Post-DP QB?

Post by couch 'em »

I was curious who the best QB at SMU post death penalty really is. This is hard to judge since offences, conferences, etc. have changed so much over time. I used totalfootballstats.com to put some data together. I looked at a couple of stats to try to account for changes in offense and strength of defense. I looked at td/attempt, attempts/TD, etc. I also looked up what sagarin ratings for schedule strength I could get. I could only get back to 1998. The data was also missing for 2000-2002. I took whichever QB had the most attempts when more than one had major playing time, except for the first Padron year, where he was just more interesting to include.

I found the best stats for QB ability seem to be yards/attempts, and attempts/TD. To me these seem to capture how successful the QB is at delivering the ball to the best target and scoring ability.

I took the sagarin schedule score and used them to normalize the results to account for opponent difficulty.

Based on this, the best QB's post DP (excluding 2000-2002) using yards per attempt are:

Year---Conference---Coach-----Quarterback
2009 CUSA Jones Padron
1996 WAC Rossley Flanigan
2006 CUSA Bennett Willis
2011 CUSA Jones McDermott
2010 CUSA Jones Padron
2004 WAC Bennett Eckert
1993 SWC Rossley Flanigan
1992 SWC Rossley Freiburger
2007 CUSA Bennett Willis
2008 CUSA Jones Mitchell
1999 WAC Cavan McCown
1994 SWC Rossley Flanigan
1990 SWC Gregg Romo
2005 CUSA Bennett Romo
1989 SWC Gregg Romo
1995 SWC Rossley Canine
1998 WAC Cavan Sanders
2012 CUSA Jones Gilbert
1991 SWC Rossley Ritz
1997 WAC Cavan Sanders
2003 WAC Bennett Bartel

Now based instead on
Year---Conference---Coach-----Quarterback
2006 CUSA Bennett Willis
2010 CUSA Jones Padron
2007 CUSA Bennett Willis
2008 CUSA Jones Mitchell
1996 WAC Rossley Flanigan
2009 CUSA Jones Padron
1999 WAC Cavan McCown
1990 SWC Gregg Romo
1997 WAC Cavan Sanders
1993 SWC Rossley Flanigan
1992 SWC Rossley Freiburger
2011 CUSA Jones McDermott
1995 SWC Rossley Canine
1998 WAC Cavan Sanders
2005 CUSA Bennett Romo
2004 WAC Bennett Eckert
1989 SWC Gregg Romo
2012 CUSA Jones Gilbert
2003 WAC Bennett Bartel
1991 SWC Rossley Ritz
1994 SWC Rossley Flanigan

(Note this upload shows yards/attempt/sagarinratio. Should be yards/attempt*sagarin ratio. The rankings above reflect this change.

Padron is up there. Shame that he fizzled out under the "QB guru."

For your missing years. I'm guessing Bartel may surprise you. He was pretty good in 2002. Also David Page will be in there.

The things Flanigan did while running for his life most of the time were amazing.

Flanigan hands down but it would have been interesting to see padron or Willis had they been able to keep it together and finish their careers on the hilltop. I honestly think Willis would have been had he been given a chance to stay at qb.

Best season I believe was Padron. He was playing lights towards the end of the year. Best overall, Flanigan.

I have to go with Romo under Coach Gregg. He put lights out numbers up against SWC competiton and had very little to support him then.

The run-n-shoot seemed a lot more exciting under Greg and Rossley......at least until we got inside the 10 yard line. The QB's seemed to routinely put up huge passing numbers.
