You're right about us being too late for Petrino since he'll be in the running for P5 jobs in December. As for Nutt why bother hiring him when at the very most his successor is going to win more with his recruits than he will?

Nutt was the guy who signed 39 recruits in one year and personally caused NCAA/SEC recruiting limitations on scholarships-Most of those kids were ineligible which caused some real problems. It doesn't matter if a guy is a 5 star if he can't qualify-if you took out all the ineligible recruits you'd find his recruiting classes were inflated

Have to go for someone who has pro or college HC experience.

A good coordinator will not have the experience to run the politics at SMU.

that's just not true
you mean like
Patterson at TCU
Briles at UH
Sumlin at UH
Stoops at OU
Gundy at OSU
Les Miles at OSU
Ron Meyer at SMU
Pretty Boy at Tech

these are only the most recent examples
of course it also applies to the other great coaches in the history of the Southwest like Royal, Broyles, Switzer, Yeoman, Teaff
hopefully the people making these decisions at SMU know a little more about college football than just these tired old erroneous myths

How dare you bring facts into a hypothetical discussion?

BTW, I would take 1,2,3,4,7,and 8 as the next coach, for what it is worth.

Let's not forget Strong at Louisville, Kelly at Oregon, and Pat Fitzgerald at NW.

Nice additions. Helfrich at Oregon is better example than Kelley though (Kelley was HC at New Hampshire, but that's an FCS school so not sure if that's what you were going for or not)

Kelly was never HC at New Hampshire (served as OC there from 1999-2006 before being hired by former Oregon HC Mike Bellotti), just like Helfrich he took over the Oregon HC job after first serving as OC.

UNLV went Division 1A though in 1978 several years after Ron Meyer
Stanford took a similar gamble on Jim Harbaugh from the University of San Diego
Dabo Swinney is another great assistant hire
I think enthusiasm, personality and commitment are really important for a school like SMU that really needs to rally its alumni and recruiting. College Football is a young man's game

I think the odds of this are almost 50/50. Which means another year lost on a closing window.

What about Ron Meyer again?!?...you'd get a pretty-talking recruiter-coach with old school Texas clout (a la Mack Brown) and surround him with young, on-the-rise assistants with the money you'd save. Maybe try to snag a promising coordinator with some sort of coach-in-waiting promise. I know we couldn't get a top coordinator here without the full head coach title, but it isn't a terrible emergency plan B IMO. Perhaps if one certain head coach retired before the end of his contract was up...
