I seem to remember Berry cracking the rotation as a true frosh before being injured. Hope he's both bigger, stronger and has returned to form and can help in the DL rotation this year. As this thread suggests, we need several guys to really step up this year if SMU's football fortunes are ever going to take a turn for the better. No more "we're young" excuses!
Well, we certainly have more experience than in years past, but we will be "young" for one more season. The lineup, as many of us see it, isn't exactly littered with seniors.
However, with that said, I talked to a guy in Dallas who said Charlie Berry is up in the 275-280 range, and likely will be pushed back inside to DT because of the lack of bodies there. Also said that Randy Denman has been great in summer workouts. As for the question that started this thread (breakout players): DE Jamar Bey Word is he now "gets it" and his strength is beginning to catch up to his height and speed.
I hope you're right. With the uncertainty around Cory Muse's leg, there are questions at DE. Justin Rogers showed signs of being really good toward the end of last season, and all reports suggest he's bigger and stronger than before, but we need to see a full season of it. Don Ieremia-Stansbury has talent and strength, but he's switching positions again, so let's wait and see. Haven't seen enough of Troy Therien to know what we have there. Beyond that, Charlie Berry is moving inside to DT, I gather, so a big year from Bey would be a huge help. He definitely has the speed to chase down QBs and the wingspan to knock down passes if he can get his arms up and gets his timing right. Another reason I'm rooting for Jamar Bey: he prompted one of my all-time favorite Phil Bennett quotes. On the night he signed, Coach Bennett hosted one of those gatherings for alumni to give them a glimpse of the new players on Signing Day. When he got to Bey, he talked about his overall athletic ability (I think he was a basketball player in HS) and then talked about his speed: "Jamar is a kid who's so fast, he gets there in a bad mood." I still don't know what that means, but it sure was funny.
I don't know. I keep hearing he's running well, and they're being cautious with him just as a protective measure. Everything I've heard suggests he'll be ready to go in August. But there are a lot of players who take until the second year after such surgery before they're really back to their old self. Here's hoping #11 isn't one of those players -- I'd like to see him snacking on some Baylor QBs in September.
I dont think Bey has shown anything the last 3 years and dont expect him to show much this year. I look for Stansbury and hopefully a healthy Muse to have a good year. Muse, prior to the knee injury, had more potential than anyone on the defense, I hope he can come back. I look at a "breakout" player to be great and yes he had a good year last year but I think Nnabufie will be great this year.
Maybe it's just a matter of clarifying the definition, but I would think Nnabuife has accomplished too much already to qualify as a "breakout" player this year. And I also heard that Bey showed great progress in the spring -- here's hoping it carries over to the season.
For my money, I'll stick to the corners: Jonathan Lindley and Brandon Jones
That's my pick, too. And can I call Reggie Carrington a "breakout" player? I'm hoping for big things from him, too.
I heard Chris Foster also is looking really good in summer workouts. If Lowery steps up, and someone wrote here that Cleveland had a great spring .... what's this, a much-improved corps? If so, suddenly the QBs will look better, the RBs will have more room to run and the coaches look smarter.
BEAT BAYLOR!
From what I hear, Justin Rogers is up to 260 and STRONG. Hopefully this is the year we see why the coaches were so hyped up about him as a (skinny) true freshman.
