DE MIKE BENSON TRANSFERRING???

Postby MrMustang1965 » Sat Jul 16, 2005 2:05 am

Anyone heard about SMU's Mike Benson wanting to transfer to Div. 1-AA Stephen F. Austin?

Reached Wednesday, SFA coach Robert McFarland said he could not confirm or deny any reports on players who have been said to be interested in coming to SFA.

“We are in the mix for a bunch of kids who potentially may transfer here,” the first-year coach said. “But I can't comment on any potential transfer, until they report for practice.”

Other players who are reported to be interested in transferring to SFA are Mike Benson (6-5, 265), a defensive end from SMU; Jerome Brooks (5-10, 205), a tailback from Purdue; and Clint LaTracy (6-3, 290), an offensive lineman from Clemson.

Division I-A players who transfer to Division I-AA schools are immediately eligible for the next season, providing they meet academic requirements.

SFA reports for workouts Aug. 4.

Pardon my ignorance, but who the hell is Mike Benson?

Obviously someone who is not even on the radar screen! He's not shown on the Mustangs roster.

I was rooting for Benson (he went to HS down here with Jamar Bey), but in the realistic world, he just wasn't moving up the depth chart. Part of that, I'm sure, was the multiple position changes. Jumping from a small private school to a D-I college is tough enough, but to play DE and OT and DT and TE, as he has in practice, makes it even tougher. Maybe this is the best thing for Mike -- I wish him well, wherever he ends up.

I think Benson and Bey were H.S. teammates out of Houston. Looks like an indication Bennett is upgrading the talent level. If a guy isn't seeing any playing time by his 3rd year in the program, that scholarship just might be in jeopardy. Don't know what the story is with Benson, but I don't recall him seeing much PT.

well let's see I got us at about 67 non-senior scholarships including the two kids Alexander and Hickman who were scheduled to be mid term additions. Bet on just about a full class of scholarships for next year-however, we will have to address the kicking game as we will be losing both our punter and place kicker.

Two mid-term additions? I thought it was three: Todd Alexander, Josh Hickman and Adrian Dizer. Do you know something the rest of us don't?
