Did anyone else see the blurb in today's DMN about Kansas bball players getting paid while Roy Williams was there?
The donkey's name is Kiki.

On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney?

Pretty inocuous stuff. A couple of boosters called Roy and asked if they could send graduation gifts to players. Roy says he got permission from someone in the AD but couldn't remember who. The largest gift was about $300. This is no gift gate. The boosters asked permission, Roy thought it would be legal since they had used up their eligibility, "says" he asked permission, the $ are small and one booster was an 80 year old woman. It will be very surprising if any penalty beyond the self imposed "futher education" penalty. Mangino on the other hand may be slapped a little harder for football transgressions.

Never liked Williams, never will.
Congratulations again to Matt Doherty for recruiting the players who won a championship.

From the Baltimore Sun:

What a relief to know that University of North Carolina coach Roy Williams didn't know he was breaking any NCAA rules when he approved cash payments and gifts to departing players while he was coaching at Kansas.

NCAA rules prohibit student-athletes from receiving gifts or money from fans even after they cease to be student-athletes, which actually makes sense when you consider that boosters could otherwise bypass recruiting rules by promising compensation after a player exhausts his eligibility.

Williams should have known this, because it's only common sense, but I guess you have to take him at his word when he says he is "saddened" by the unintentional violations, but I'm guessing that will be small consolation to the current Kansas athletes who will suffer the consequences.

Well said.

There will be no suffering by KU basketball. These are the results of an internal investigation. There are some education penalties prescribed by KU, nothing more. The real consequence of this will likely fall on the football team where they will be restricted to signing 3 JUCO guys per year for the next few years. Mangino was the coach when the "excessive" help for football players was going on. Self wasn't involved in any of the basketball deal and they were small.

"Make an example out of them," I say.

Any excuse that "I did not understand the rules" or "misunderstood the rules" is laughable. Not very smart....how long has Roy been in the business...and how good (lousy) is compliance at Kansas?

Give 'em the death penalty! Ha!

2010- Yea- As our good fromer Presidient Clinton says it depends on what the meanning of "is" is.
Roys programs are cleaner that most, I ould guess in the top 10%. That does mean that you are picking from a list of ugly women for your date though.
The idea though that once an anthlete always an athlete is a joke. When you are a 35 year old banker and your business acuaintnence buys your lunch and he is also a big supporter of good ole State U, i say we turn them both end. That is as ridiculous as any post made todate re this practice.
