June Jones in 2008...

Postby AustinPerson » Fri Sep 27, 2013 12:15 am

Interesting to read this web site's prediction of what June jones would do for smu back before the 2008 season. Yes, we all wanted smu in the big 12:

Some posters are trying to dig up anything to support JJ. LOL.

Here is a 2013 article from this week by Kevin Sherrington:

Question: How lucky is SMU to have Uconn, USF, Memphis, and Temple on their conference schedule this year? With a lucky break, they could get a bowl invite. (and they say there are too many bowls)

Kevin Sherrington: SMU needs to at least be competitive against TCU to make this season palatable for fans, even if they go to a bowl. June Jones has raised expectations, but now things are flattening out.

And your point is? June Jones has raised expectations. How did he do that?

Things are flattening out. Yes they are, at 7-8 wins a season.

We need to improve on that, sure, but since when does a coach who has coached an undefeated regular season within the last 10 years, and who turned your program from averaging 3 wins a year to averaging over 7, not get a little patience from the fans? Since he came to SMU the most unjustly entitled place on earth.

No one is saying there aren't problems, but the way the sheep on this board have just decided that recruiting is the be all and end all.... guess you didn't ever go to basketball games the past 6 years.......

Read Ponyfans for a day and tell my why on earth June would want to stay here, and why any coach would want to come here.

look at June's laidback demeanor, pathetic offense, and his apathy towards recruiting and tell me why on earth any SMU fan would want him to stay here.

and sorry but things arent flattening out. we're on the decline. in year 6 we beat an FCS team by 1 point. further, we continue to get embarrassingly wrecked by any decent program. based on the last few recruiting classes, talent level and the future of SMU football looks bleak.

the sooner we cut ties with JJ and start with a young, hungry, charismatic coach who actually puts some effort in recruiting, the quicker we will start to improve.

We're barely over 0.500 in the regular season and have played abysmally against good teams, except in Hawaii. You make it should like we are on the cusp of a 10 win season or something. We win against nobodies at home, lose on the road. No signs of improvement or even a desire to.

No, you have to do both or you will end up mediocre. Urban Myer said that he would not hire a coach that couldn't do both.

I love this vaguely conspiratorial reference, like JJ magically has the team play well in HI but the rest of the year he hides the magic beans....

You make it should like we are on the cusp of a 10 win season or something.

We might be, and there is no-one who can predict it, he did it at HI without much "talent".

We win against nobodies at home, lose on the road.

We used to be a nobody.

No signs of improvement or even a desire to.

Another airless argument based on JJ's demeanor and the fact that people are so entrenched in their hatred of JJ that they wouldn't see any improvement if it slept with their mom.

I don't know if the volleyball player incident is true or not, so let's leave that implication out.

Recruiting has always been the be all and end all, some people are just starting to realize that.

I don't like making references to BBall but Matt Doherty proves all I need to prove on that point.

Matt Doherty proves nothing, he didn't come close to being a force in recruiting (like Brown became almost immediately). You want references to basketball then see any program out there winning national championships. Do the same for football as well.

Matt was a great recruiter for the program he had, punched well above his weight and then coached the life out of the kids. You might not have learned a lesson from that but I'm glad the AD and money men did.
