No offense to you TWALV - but I care more about what the players/recruits want than what the alums think. They deserve to have something fun (it would only be for one game a year!) to look forward to wearing. Just my $.02

Here's an idea. Buy the helmets for 1 game. Then sell the authentic game worn helmets for $500 each after the game. Do it yearly. The helmets pay for themselves and the team and fans are happy.

In all seriousness, we live in what I call a Kardashian society and I do not mean that as a complement. That is the way it is, the kids want flash and something a little outrageous, something a little over the top. I don't think it will make a lot of difference one or two games a year. It will not destroy the image of SMU. I do think by using some of the older style of unis, I am talking 40 & 50's, you could make it look cool. Then again what do I know, I'm just an oilman not a fashion genius.

Actually SMU has an elitist image that kind of hurts you when you recruit inner city kids. It might be a good idea to do something kind of modern to at least act like SMU can relate to them.

99% of the private schools in the country have a misguided ill-conceived elitest image that is or not true. So does the 'big' public schools like UCLA, Michigan & on & on. Every $%$#$ private school in Calif. has an elitest image & that includes both SC & Stanford. They're over the top if you want to play that class warfare BS. So what??? That 'elitist BS really doesn't fly anymore. Next -
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

I hear what you are saying but locally for whatever reason that image is pretty deep rooted. Not trying to argue just saying. Even Coach Jones said that in an interview on a Hawaii radio show at few months ago. I will give him credit in that he is trying to change that and even in the show he said that was one of the things he was trying to help change.

It is not about work but attitude. That born with a silver spoon in your mouth attitude that looks down upon people attitude. I am not saying it is true in all cases but it is the perception locally due to unfortunate events of the past. The further you get away from SMU distance wise the better the perception gets.

Hah, it's all good. Just relevant to my perspective in this conversation.

I'll take it as a compliment.... 8)

All the elitist & accessibility talk is absurd. I'm sorry, it just is. Our problem isn't not being "hood" enough. Our problem is losing.

"Inner city" kids aren't avoiding SMU because a handful of alumni are snobby. People don't come to games or buy our shirts because we suck. If you don't think we suck (in the grand scheme of things), you are delusional.

Kids/Recruits/Most normal people like winners. If we were winning, and beating real opponents (nope 4-1 facing UCF isn't good enough - save it), the seats would fill & the shirts would sell. If we were winning, you could fill the buses with all the kids you wanted. Right now, kids don't think we're cool because we aren't. Bottom line.

Do you think the Lakers, Yankees, or recently the Heat are "accessible"??? Ask most kids who their favorite basketball team is. Most will say the Heat these days... Do you really think it's because they are a bunch of genuine, salt of the earth guys??

Do you really think SC, Miami, and Duke are accessible??? Give it a rest. We are no better/no worse than any other private institution (and a lot of public schools as another poster stated). Just drop the elitist whines - it's stupid and flat wrong.

I don't condone the snobbery that does exist (at SMU or anywhere), but this and every other excuse for why we aren't "popular" other than the product on the field are bull[gary].

Oh, and to stay on topic, the chrome helmets are sweet for a game or two.

It IS a issue if potential fans or recruits are uncomfortable going to campus. It is the same reason you dont host am event you want to attract HP residents to in pleasant grove. We have to tone it down, or change the narrative

I would pose an alternative theory: We aren't popular in many places, because for 25 years we ignored them or told the players from there, "You aren't smart enough to go to SMU. Even though you are an NCAA qualifier, you are not SMU qualified". That is Ken Pye's legacy. JJ is the first coach that hasn't been hamstrung by these restrictions. He is affected by the result, but he can now get that kid into the school or at least visit the campus.

will not argue that, except the work part I not sure where that came from. I had to deal with the same type of stereotype growing up in HP. There will always be those that will be more than happy to play up the stereotype, act like snobs. and therefore everyone is labeled the same. Those people are usually so insecure that is what they have to do to build themselves up and make themselves feel better about themselves, IMO. I have never understood that line of thinking. Dallas is seen as a snobby city by many from the outside. That does not help the SMU image as well.

So damn true, winning will always be the best kind of community outreach. Maybe we'll figure that someday.
