I have not voted in this poll, but an extension could be done. It could be worded in a manner that would say if SMU did not win the conference that Jones would resign at the end of the season. Or require that we have a winning season or Jones would resign willingly. Or Jones would be paid out of his contract if certain levels of success were not attained. It could say anything but would allow recruiting (enter your own jokes here) to continue until such time that we were in a position to hire a new coach. There are none available out there right now except Kiffen. Want him? I do not know of many decent coaches out there that would leave their schools willingly a this time for SMU. Lets not lose the recruits we have until we have a new coach who can decide whether or not he wants to keep any of the ones we have or start over.

One will be an extension, one will be his resignation. They will probably agree to pay him for resigning. If he doesn't wish to sign either, then they lop his head off.
The public will understand SMU's position of not wanting to go with lame duck.

Emotionally, I would be more than OK with this approach. Unfortunately, I am a realist... This is never going to happen. Nor should it happen. We have to recognize how much this man has done for our Alma Mater. If the CoC wants to pull the trigger (they are the decision makers here), the trigger should be pulled and have the whole thing done quickly, cleanly and with respect. There is a right way to terminate any employee. Humiliating them and then doing it is unprofessional and reflects poorly on you, not the person being fired.

end of year, especially since we wont be bowling w/out some miracle turnaround. Early Dec.
Our class is full of 2 stars, I'm sure the next coach could fill it ok.

I'm not sure what is humiliating about this approach. Go ahead and do it with a little more tact and finesse than I outlined, but basically, you are with us for the long haul or you are out. Paying him to leave ain't humiliating. And of course an extension needs to be structured in SMU's favor such as Mrydel outline above.
But this needs to be done soon, as in before season is over..
oh, and before actually offering extension, SMU would need a Come to Jesus meeting with Jones, where he outlines how is going to change the trajectory of this program...I.e...what are you gonna do to improve recruiting? who do you hire to spark recruiting? Without a good understanding and commitment from Jones, then there is no extension offered, and you need to resign.
Oh, and if SMU extends, SMU needs to have assurances of his help in transitioning is to the next head coach when Jones leaves. Not sure how or if all these things can be included in extension, but just my opinion.
Of course, with all that said, SMU should not make it easy for him to extend, and should push for his resignation if the meetings are not completely positive as to future trajectory of program.

I do not think an extension should be offered imo. That would be easy money for JJ imo. And I would not ask JJ for help finding s new coach because the last thing we need is one of his buddies taking over the program imo.

Good gosh, no, we don't want him to conduct the search, just assurances that he plays nice and cooperates in transitioning in SMU's best interests.

I know. So then he doesn't get paid when he breaks that trust.

At this point, the main objective however it may go is to find an amazing recruiter and get in an OC and a DC that we can afford that have best possible play books. We desperately need the players not the playbook.

SMU should grow some balls and hire lane kiffin on a 2 year contract. he will end up a coordinator at a BCS team if we wait too long

Kiffin will be a BCS HC, no way he's coming to work at a non-AQ school (especially on a 2 year contract).

It would funny to see GP and Kiffin verbally spar during rivalry week...he could be an a-hole coach to match their a-hole coach.

I don't care if other coaches and fans hate Kiffen-a lot of that is recruiting. But as others have pointed out there are usually internal issues at the prigrams he's been at that do raise the red flags. I think there are better alternatives.

There's no way there should be ten people that think June should be extended.... What a joke. Abu and Jason must have made a bunch of profiels
