No 2pt attempt, then onside kick ????

Post by Pony in SA »

I realize it wouldn't have mattered, but we score to make it 34-16 and Gilbert yelling to go for 2 as he knows we need 3 8pt plays to tie it at 34. He even signals sideline we need to go for 2, check your DVR. He's told "No" and we just kick extra point so now we still have to score 3 times.

I think fine, just playing it out and get out of there but then we try onside kick ?? What are we doing ?? If you were going to try onside kick wouldn't you have gone for 2 to get within 2 scores ?? Again, seems to me we have NO plan, unprepared, no vision on what we want to do. Didn't go for two and told your QB not needed, then tried onside kick ?? Are the coaches even talking to each other ??

Don't get me started on the QB knowing more than staff only chance was to get within 2 scores, or the message not going for 2 is to your players we have no chance anyway so we'll just play it out and is a losing mentality...

Again I realize odds of success close to none but you told your kids forget it, and then looked silly trying some onside kick that we couldn't even execute. My son's 8th grade team continues to look better prepared, with better plan and execution, then our guys.

I also pondered that decision. By electing to kick the XP, you're basically signaling to the world "that's it, game over." Agreed, the odds of us executing and recovering two straight on-side kicks and scoring TDs to tie the game is very slim - but to not even go for two, and keep it a three score game, it says "we give up."

Then to immediately try and kick the onside kick - what? How does one even rationalize that?

JJ's been thinking "game over" ever since the ASU fiasco.

June is just cashing checks. He doesn't care anymore and it's pretty obvious.

These days you have to be a die-hard masochist to be an SMU fan.

You can't rationalize it. These decisions reflect to me lack of preparation, organization, etc. that demand some type of change.

Not sure they had the 2 point conversion when Jones was an NFL coach. He may not have know it was an option.

I posted this in another thread. Clueless move by the coaches.

After further reflection, and a good night's sleep...how the hell do you make this decision?

Step 1: Give up on game by kicking XP.
Step 2: Attempt onside kick still down by three scores.
Step 3: ???????????
Step 4: Win.

Just plain clueless coaching staff...a virtual graveyard for coaches.

Hades, we couldn't make it in the end zone with 1st and goal on the one. We couldn't pick up a first down with 2nd and 1 multiple times.

What makes anyone think we could convert a 2 point conversion with only 1 try from the 3? Our offense yesterday was Bennett's team against Rice reincarnated.

If we were going for two we might as well have just punted. We know our punter could kick it into the end zone and at least keep TCU for running it back for two. Hades, he proved all game long that hie could blast punt after punt into the end zone.

At least by kicking the EP we minimized our chances of making things worse.

That argument doesn't hold water. If we were doing damage control at that point, we still wouldn't have kicked the onside. There is no way around calling this incompetence by the coaching staff.

I know, I was yelling at the TV, and GG was over ruled. I figured, well June just raised white flag and just wants to cover the spread, duh.... Then another failed onside kick!
Unacceptable!

This is my biggest issue and main reason I would push for a change. No apparent plan or direction, no organization, looks Mickey Mouse to those watching, recruits, etc. We have how many coaches and we can't get things like this right year 6 ???
