Go Big or go Big SkyJ.J is what he is.
He has done what he has done. Some of what he accomplished here was great for SMU football, in taking the step it needed to take at the time he took over. His time here is over. And I think he would admit that, if not for the paycheck. What he cannot accomplish here, goes far beyond his coaching limitations. The University (and all backers, donors, supporters, and fans) need to make a decision on the direction and role of the football program. Go big. Or go Big Sky. At this point the team is not competitive in the world of D1 CFB. If this is the case, I'm not sure why SMU is continuing to schedule and play with the big boys of Texas football, and AQ conferences. At this point, SMU is more on the level of teams like: TX st, UNT, UTSA, SFA, Mont St. etc. Let's be real here. You don't want Baylor. You can't handle Baylor!!!
Re: Go Big or go Big SkyGo big sky or any pathetic conference, then sign me off as a fan for life... GO BIG SMU and BE COMMITTED.
Re: Go Big or go Big SkyI just wish that we would schedule a reasonable OOC schedule as every September seems to suck the life out of an SMU football season...
Re: Go Big or go Big Sky
There's the answer, lower expectations and embrace mediocrity. I'm not sure SMU can ever be great again. Too many fans think like this. #NewLobCity

Re: Go Big or go Big Sky
I wish we would start recruiting like a serious FBS program so our fans would stop being afraid of playing serious FBS programs. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: Go Big or go Big Sky
Its not embracing mediocrity. Its building momentum and excitement. In a weaker conference you can start out 7-0 or 8-0 and get some positive press. That's where it all starts. The UH comparison is a good one....I doubt there is much of a difference in terms of the 2 teams but everyone assumes UH is better - fans and recruits.
Re: Go Big or go Big Sky
My vision for this program is not to be UH. My vision is for SMU to be SC or Stanford. #NewLobCity
Re: Go Big or go Big Sky
It's definitely embracing mediocrity, that type of cowardice won't build any momentum and excitement in this town. The only way we're building momentum and excitement is this town is to vastly improve recruiting (see SMU basketball) and start beating Texas P5 teams. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: Go Big or go Big Sky
Starting every season 1-3 does not help you "vastly improve recruiting". And that has to happen before you beat the P5 teams.

Well no kidding...me too.

Re: Go Big or go Big Sky
Building a staff that can recruit (see SMU basketball) helps you "vastly improve recruiting" and that has to happen before we beat the P5 teams. Starting every season 1-3 is a direct result of terrible recruiting. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: Go Big or go Big SkyI think he means ease up a little on the non-conference...which I agree on...
Per CBS sports top 10 nonconference schedules for 2013: 2. (tie) SMU | Index -- 3.5: The Mustangs load up on their old SWC foes, opening against Texas Tech then, visiting Texas A&M and TCU later in September. In Week 2, they get a really strong FCS opponent, Montana State, which won 11 games in 2012. Just going 2-2 before joining the new American Athletic Conference seems optimistic.
