Per CBS sports top 10 nonconference schedules for 2013:
2. (tie) SMU | Index -- 3.5: The Mustangs load up on their old SWC foes, opening against Texas Tech then, visiting Texas A&M and TCU later in September. In Week 2, they get a really strong FCS opponent, Montana State, which won 11 games in 2012. Just going 2-2 before joining the new American Athletic Conference seems optimistic.
We can't ease up from this point on.

Our future OOC consists of TCU, Baylor and UNT. Please don't tell me you think we need to "ease up a little" from that.

I would love to see us nationally competitive again. I attended SMU in the sixties and we were competitive. We won the SWC and were nationally ranked. I loved Sunday afternoon when I would be waiting to hear what our ranking was going to be. I also, as an alum, loved the Pony Express days when I had the bragging rights at work. BUT, is the money available? Like many of you, I have been relative successful, but I cannot afford to make CoC type donations. If I was in the shoes of Turner and I had the financial backing to do so I would fire JJ as soon as I knew it was impossible for us to go to a BCS bowl this year - which probably means two conference losses. I would hire a new coach which would probably require large money guaranteed for 5 years and want enough money available that I could fire him after 3 years if he was not performing. (We couldn't fire JJ after the ASU fiasco because we still owed him too much.) In short I would go BIG! On the other hand if I could not raise the money to be able to hire and fire then I would just let JJ finish his contract, because I can cover it with Conference money and then go small. I would not continue to make a mockery of our school with claiming we want to have a nationally competitive BCS football team. After all, it is clear that the students we are attracting do not care about football. It is not helping us recruit students. It is not even helping us with the Second Century Campaign. Both are happening with a pitiful excuse for a top notch football program. So to answer the question, Go Big if you have the money or go Big Sky.

sbsmith has got it right-ask yourself a question-are any of you afraid for Larry Brown's Basketball team to play a tough Big 12 or SEC team? No you'd be looking forward to it because he is getting the quality talent to compete with those programs win or lose. Again our schedule is not that tough. Most SMU teams in history have played much tougher schedules

How about go Mountain West? Every one of those teams would make for a better football matchup than any of the teams in the AAC, in my humble non-SMU viewpoint.
I mean really, Rutgers? Temple? South Florida? Central Florida? Who cares a fig about them? The only one that strikes my interest would be SMU v. Houston (barely).
Go play Boise State, Nevada, Air Force, or Wyoming and you'll generate some interest.

We'll look into that when we want to pull the plug on the program.

We might have been "competitive" in the 60's but besides 1966 & 1968 the W-L records look very familiar to SMU post death penalty....... 1960: 0-9-1 1961: 2-7-1 1962: 2-8 1963: 4-7 1964: 1-9 1965: 4-5-1 1966: 8-3 - SWC Champions 1967: 3-7 1968: 8:3 1969: 3-7 1970: 5-6
