A Hawaii Fan's Perspective on June Jones . . . 9 years ago

Postby PonyTime » Mon Sep 30, 2013 3:03 pm

This posted by a Hawaii fan 9 years ago under the heading Fire June Jones...(after a 63-3 road loss to Boise State putting UH at 3-4 for the year). I post this because I see the exact same posts on this board...

Keep in mind UH would finish that season 5-1, win a bowl game, and beat two P5 teams in the process. A year and a half later they would win 24 of their next 28 games finishing those years with a #24 and #17 ranking.

LDub20 finally got what he wanted: Norm Chow is 3-13 in his first 16 games, two of those wins against Lamar and South Alabama. Hawaii went from Sugar Bowl to perhaps the worst team in the NCAAs.

Here you go - from LDub20 9 years ago...

June Jones is a bum.
His run-and-sh1t offense has been figured out.
It no longer puts fear in opponents.
He has no idea how to recruit.
He gives scholarships to the whole world.
His idea of recruiting is going up the road and checking out the golf team or the women's water polo team.
And guess what "They all have a chance to play on Sundays."
"This is the best recruiting class ever."
Hawaii has no atheletes!
I thought when June Jones took over we were going to the "next level."
I also thought he would be able to attract some blue chip atheletes especially on offense.
Chad Owens is a nice WAC player, but come on now there's a reason why he had to walk on first.
He would get smashed in other conferences.
I can't believe that in his 6th year we've had such poor atheletes at the WR postioins.
If your gonna have a pass-pass-pass offense, at least get some bigger recievrs like 6'2-6'4 on the outside so they can stretch the field and make the big play.
This offense only works against inferior opponents.
When it doesn't work it's painful to watch.
How hard is it to get sum blue chippers to come and live free in paradise!
It's way too late to get any blue chippers.
Hawaii's chances slipped couple years ago.
The whole nation has caught on that Hawaii sucks!
Bottom line is players make the plays.
Hawaii has no play makers!
But, when a team gets whooped this many times.
It's the coach's fault and he takes the blame.
June Jone's makes no adjustments or preparations.
Get a D-Coordinatoer!
What the hell is George Lumpkin doing as a DC!
Timmy Chang sucks as well.
He's the biggest choker in history!
Nice QB w/ talent, but give me a guy who has heart and can win the big games.
His W/L record is almost the same since he's been here!
He needs to go!
We were better off before him!(Rolo!)
Can we say Norm Chow!
Please?
When June Jone's took over his goal was to turn Hawaii into a Top 25 program each year and take Hawaii to the "next level."
We've only been in the Top 25 once since he's been here and for only one week when Alabama came here and beat us that year.
I think Bob Wagner put Hawaii in the top 25 at least 2 or 3 times.
At least his team's played defense and tried to tackle people!
Coach's are judged in the 4th year on how their doing at a program.
This is June Jone's 6th year!
It's obvious something is not working when we are getting blown out each time.
Players on not responding to coaching.
Coaches are not making the right adjustments and preparations.
At least be competative on the road and especially on a national T.V.
This guy is being paid the "big money" to coach.
I think Von Oppen would have had better showings if given a chance.
He should take all the blame!
His offense only works against Tulsa, San Jose, and oooh even Nevada.
It didn't work against Portland St. and against Florida Atlantic!
This is a "what have you done for me lately business?"
Why can't Hawaii compete w/BCS schools?
I don't expect Hawaii to ever compete for a national championship.
But, don't get embarssed on the national stage.
Boise and Utah do it!
If you can win in Boise, Idaho you can win in paradise!
Boise has nation's longest winning streak, undefeated, always RANKED!
What's their secret?
A good coach!
Urban Meyer and Dan Hawkins.
Utah was down 2-3 years ago.
Hawaii was a better program.
Now that they have a new coach there a BCS buster!
And don't think there not coming to Hawaii to take all the top recruits.
They did before.
This thing about Hawaii's distance is why they always lose on the road is crap.
Teams come here and win.
Ex:FAU ring a bell.
I thought Florida St. came to town not Florida Atlantic!
You said that blue chippers will choose BCS schools.
Well, part of that is true Blue Chippers will go to schools that win!
If I was a WR or QB Hawaii would be one of my choices.
This is a offensive player's dream to play in and for a so called NFL coach.
But, not if they constantly get blown out!
My last point Timmy Chang is the most overrated player in college football history.
His W/L record since he's been here is something like 24-22.
That stinks!
A QB is judged on how many games he wins.
This guy constantly chokes!
Nobody cares about that passing record!
People care about wins!
Hawaii won more games w/out Tammy,I mean Timmy.
I guarantee that this is the beggining of the end for Hawaii and June Jones.
These guy's are about finesse.
No football team want's to be called a "finnese" team.
They don't tackle or even bother practice tackling.
Last time I checked football involve tackling!
Thanks for agreeing!
We do suck!
Who has June Jones beaten that earns national respect.
BYU!
No one outside of Hawaii cares about BY-WHO.
BYU stinks, but they'll run right over Hawaii just like FAU and Portland St.
HAAAH!
Kahuku would probably have a chance against Hawaii's defense.
The only other team he beat was Alabama, but they were down that year.
But, I'll still give him that.
So one team in 6 years from a power conferense!
$808,000 for that!
Bob Wagner did that year in year out.
Except he's a lot cheaper and his teams had pride and know how to tackle!

Personally, I don't see us winning 29 of our next 34 games. I would be absolutely thrilled to be proven wrong.

Hawaii got seal clubbed in the Sugar Bowl. They looked absolutely awful. It didn't help that Colt Brenan was on heroin, but still.

It's actually is a pretty scary comparison though. Spot on.

Personally I don't want to waste 34 more games waiting for something that isn't likely to happen.

I think I know what PonyTime is trying to do but we have not beaten 2 power teams nor gone 5-1 in conference last year. In fact. we barely made a bowl game last year and the 2014 recruitng class hardly has any players with BCS offers. And we just got beat by 31 point by our crosstown rivals while they are in a down year.

We could luck in to Colt Brennan but odds are poor.

Also statistically our offense isn't what Hawaii's ever was.

My Points:

1. You can be at your lowest of lows (like this guy) and not know all of the great things to come. Hawaii was in for the best couple of years of football that they would ever know at that school.

2. Be careful what you ask for - you might get it... and not like it.

Not saying that we should or should not keep going down the Jones path. I am waiting until the end of this year to judge. If Gary Patterson jumped in a Van filled with Carl Sewell cash and rode on over to coach the Ponies, I would be the first to celebrate. But that ain't gonna happen.

With Jones, I doubt that we will roll off a bunch of Ws like they did at Hawaii. But you never really know. Everyone on this forum seems to think along the same lines as the Hawaii poster.

Let's go out there and win the AAC.

I think you are advocating going down the same path. And I think you are a JJ supporter not an SMU support imo.

Why wait for a lucky stretch? Tell your boss

"Gee Mr. Manager, I've been doing [deleted] work for a while but if you fire me you won't know if I can do a better job." Would your boss buy that or would he kick you out the door without batting an eye?

You are correct - for this year, stick with June. What goes on in the AAC will determine where I stand on this. I also supported Tom Rossley, Mike Caven, and Phil Bennett.

Lucky Stretch? That's a stretch.

You go tell Hunt, Line, Beachum, LeRibeus, Beasley, Sanders, Robinson, etc that their Bowl Wins were due to an unexpected Lucky Stretch by June Jones.

Unless you can get Fatterson to jump in Sewell's van like said before, 0 - 12 is more likely to
happen in the next year or 2 with your young hotshot SUPERCRUITER.

With the talent on hand 0-12 is more likely even if we keep June (let's not forget he did have a 1-11 season).
