Re: Perfect coach for SMU
Yea I guess most SMU fans "wouldn't mind" Mike Tomlin. Maybe we can get Saban to be a coordinator or something. PonyFans.com - home of the most delusional sports fans on the internet.

Do it.
Re: Perfect coach for SMU
Apparently someone didn't teach you math, but 13-15-2 & 19-20-1 are both > than 32-37, so it is not Matty Bell from the '40's as you stated above. Of course you can eliminate the post-DP coaches, no one will argue that point. Now you are left with Bill Meek & Hayden Fry. I cannot speak to Meek, but Hayden Fry took us to the Sun Bowl, Bluebonnet Bowl (win over OU was arguably a Top 5 historic win for SMU) and a Cotton Bowl. He also had a 7-4 team that did not go bowling because back in the day bowl games meant something. Just as important, his teams were always competitive, even in defeat. I remember SMU's last game for Hayden, they played their hearts out for that man and if memory serves me correctly, their opponent TCU did not cross the 50 yard line until the 2nd half. So yes, by your criteria I will concede JJ > Bill Meek, but before we totally dismiss Meek, understand he was here for 5 years and by today's criteria (.500 gets you a bowl game) would have taken SMU to 2 bowl games and came oh so close to a 3rd (4-5-1 season when we defeated UT & Ark).

Re: Perfect coach for SMU
what is all this about age? why the hell does this matter? Tom Osbourne. Anybody remember him? was he not pushing his mid 60's after winning his last national championship ? And how old is Saban? Spurrier? Reminds me of the stupid quote Earl Campbell made regarding Mac's age. Plenty of reasons to can mac. Age is not one of them.

Dude, he can be 100 and wear a dress while on riding Liberty and Justice hopped up on Xanex if we can win the AAC and a BCS bowl. And I am being literal.
Re: Perfect coach for SMU
Agreed. Someone like that is our best option IMO. Young, passionate, Texas connections, unproven commodity. As a side note, I find it hilarious that all the "old guys" on here focus solely on the mention of wanting a coach under 50.
Re: Perfect coach for SMUPut away the broad brush. I do not have a problem with a coach under 50 or over 50. Or even one that is 50. I want one that can coach and can put together an energetic staff. The head coach does not go out recruiting very often so it is most important that the staff be able to.
But it seems all the youngsters on this site think we could have gotten Kingsbury when even had we he would have jumped to Tech in a minute. So then let's get the Michigan State coach. No reason he would not want to be at SMU. Better yet, let's get James Franklin. He should be ready to get out of that pesky SEC for the AAC. I think there is enough pipedreaming to go around without picking on we poor, inexperienced, know nothing old guys. All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand
