What is an unqualified graduate assistant? What makes them unqualified? What part of their work do you deem insufficient for promotion? People have said they want younger coaches, but I guess these are the wrong younger coaches under your assessment? I'd love to know more about your assessment criteria and the sources for your data....

I would think you would hire a ST coach that has actual D1 experience coaching STs. I am glad you are so happy with the performance of our special teams. Many of us are not.

I have reread my post and found no mention of my happiness. I just don't care for your unilateral declaration of people's qualifications. We had a ST coach last year and he was a disaster. He was removed and his position was filled. I'm guessing that they had to cover the position from within the budget, especially since Mumme has arrived, but that is a guess. In any case Carlos deserves more than 4 games before he is thrown to the mewling hordes.

I can assure you that the swim team has never had an on side kick returned for a TD. Just goes to show the coaching difference.

And at the end of the first season, some will say to give him a chance since it was just his first year. In the second year, some other excuse will be made up. Third year will be the charm right? Then, fourth year, and sixth year (until we're in JJ tenure), and the excuses still continue, much like they do with JJ.

The symptoms of what is going on now have been evident for a few years now. Time to wake up from this 25+ year slumber.

m-abu. Can you really say that our special teams this year are better than last? Kicking better? Coverage better? Kickoffs better? tackling better? On-side kicks better? blocked punts and extra points better? I don't think so. And yes, we were bad last year but this year is pathetic.

I'm not saying that our special teams are better than last year but they have a new coach. And special teams have been a little disorganized but I think "pathetic" is unfair to them. Have we seen the opposition constantly or often in great field position after punts, kos? I can't recall thinking that but I might be wrong. The "on-side" kick, and I use that term loosely, was an aberration and a low point in my time as an SMU fan but I won't write off the ST becasue of it. I will say that I have noticed some disorganization on the team (and actually the team as a whole) regarding personnel that I find unacceptable, but again, I'm not quite as down on the ST as you are. I will be paying attention to them on Saturday though.
