New Band DirectorApparently, the new director of the Mustang Band has been officially chosen to replace Dave Kehler who left to pursue a doctorate.
Don Hopkins, the new director, was previously the head director at South Garland High School. He's an SMU alum from the early 80's, so that means one more on campus job actually filled by someone who KNOWS SMU and went here. Hubba hubba Don! We're expecting big things! From high on the hilltop, in Big D...
Is he from the "96 Guys and a Doll" era? Can we ever get back to 96? If you say this is good news... this is a heckuva deal! (as long as the "marketing" department doesn't make you change the Diamond M to "Old English" or "Times New Roman" or a new font created by a focus group)
Um...nobody's gonna respond to that?
Billy Joe, I agree for the most part that we need to be football specific on this board, however there is not...and I repeat...not any other group of students alums or fans that provide more spirit and support for our football team than the Mustang Band. Forget half time entertainment for a moment and imagine what a larger band playing our fight song during the game would mean to the team and fans. In other words, it is relevant to discuss the possibility of the band getting back to its old full fighting size.
We already beat that horse of a football team to death, there's nothing more to say. Where the f--- were you, newbie? On the phone or checking your private e-mail?
When was the last time you saw the band leave after halftime? Just send 'da money.
Billy Joe, the band MAKES college football. Go to a game, any game, anywhere. Then make it a BIG game, at a big-time school. Tell me, when you go home afterward, what's going through your mind...an extra point that was made, or the fight song?
And no, I wasn't in band in high school or college. I was an athlete. Now, as a fan, I don't think college football would be college football without the band. I commonly cite the following example of how important band/crowd involvement is. This is from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution the day after we saw LSU beat UGA at the SEC title game in '03. This is how football & the band were meshed: "Georgia's return to the title game had spawned some concern around the conference. Had this already become the SEC's worst nightmare --- a dome-field advantage for Georgia, an annual SEC Dawgfest in the Georgia Dome? Uh, hardly. Not with LSU's fans and 32-tuba Tiger band matching Georgia decibel for decibel. And not with the Tigers themselves dominating the first half." Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 12/7/03
the title "New Band Director" is a clue. if you only want to read pure football concentrate on the title. I for one am o.k. with versatile SMU information. this forum offers interesting information other than football.
If there's a topic you don't want to read, Aggie, don't read it. I like to know about what's going on with things like the Band since they are an integral part of SMU football games. If you actually stumbled into the stadium after drinking on the boulevard, you would know that.
Another great post for "Around the Hilltop" Forum
What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.
sucka, half the people on this board are either mustang band boosters, alums, or current members... if there can be a 57 page thread about hamburgers, and 26 DIFFERENT threads started during any ONE football game ... just with updates about the GAME ...then there can be ONE simple thread about the band during the summer Billie Joe = ![]() I pity the fool ! First name \"Mister\"
Middle name \"Period\" Last name.... \"T\"
