Ramblings on June.Moderators: PonyPride, SmooPower Ramblings on June.http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/05/15/hawaii-football-changing-name-back-to-rainbow-warriors/
Just a reminder to those who think June has poo-pooed our traditions, and that this shows how he has never really taken to SMU. He meddled with the UH traditions, even changing the team name. And he changed the jersey colors too. This is just part of June's persona. It's strange, I don't like that he feels the need to try to change things in this manner but just remember that he's always been this way. And, SMU, has largely kept him at bay. The geldings are gone, the black jerseys lasted one game. Maybe June has never taken to SMU because we didn't pander to his every wish like Hawaii did. In Hawaii he was a hero, even bringing political figures into play to try to keep him. We never gave him that. And the crowds never came like they did in Honolulu. We didn't keep the black jerseys; We didn't keep the geldings; (I won't go into my feelings on that) We didn't keep the luncheons; We didn't even keep any form of coach-fan interaction; Dallas didn't come flocking; Texas's best players didn't bang down the door. Who is more disappointed with the way this has gone? SMU or June? I don't think he should have expected to be able to change all these things just by being June, but I can understand that if he did he must be pretty disenfranchised. Mustangs Abu!
Re: Ramblings on June.Let's be honest, Hawaii had a [deleted] rainbow on their helmet when June got there. They needed an overhaul. SMU's traditions and logos were/are fine.

Re: Ramblings on June.
I actually agreed with June Jones changing how things are done in SMU. SMU's traditions are useless if no one follows them. We need to create new traditions and make them traditions of a winning program from a city that follows WINNERS
Re: Ramblings on June.
SMU should have listened to June Jones in some things. The two stallions instead of Peruna were a good way to start a new tradition...and to change the "Pony Up" to something better like "GO MUSTANGS" or "FEAR THE CHARGE" or "BRACE FOR THE STAMPEDE" something that sounds better than saying Pony up and Pony this and Pony that...everyone makes fun of us for that. even TCU changed their ways and did a successful sports marketing move with "FEAR THE FROG"...just saying
Re: Ramblings on June.but they KEPT the FROG!!!!!!!
You don't see how your argument falls apart Their mascot is Kermit the Frog Yet they built their marketing around a [deleted]' Frog Last edited by Stallion on Wed Oct 02, 2013 3:17 pm, edited 1 time in total.

lol
Re: Ramblings on June.Hawaii needed the changes... you would want to be a rainbow warrior.. seriously.. Our traditions have been rooted in our identity -> success, name recognition, etc, (pre DP). We dont need to change, we need someone to embrace and shout it out to Dallas until they come. The first thing for the new coach is to get GOOD (not DITR) recruits, WIN GAMES, then dive into our traditions for the long-term effect.
Re: Ramblings on June.
But It's the SMU Mustangs. We could be like TT. Mustangs and Peruna
Re: Ramblings on June.
"Pony Up" is not a tradition, it was a half arse attempt at marketing a few years back. The problem with two horses with riders on them is that once they get riders, they are no longer mustangs and then the riders become a feature of the mascot. Now I know Peruna is not a mustang either, but Peruna is actually a tradition that has been around for a long time including during the Doak Walker era as well as the Dickerson and James era. Fact is, Peruna will kick butt better than some of the other schools' mascots I've seen including the fearful frog. If we start winning like TCU has, people won't be making fun of Peruna. Hell...the aggies have a freaking collie for a mascot...ain't nobody making fun of that these days. SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: Ramblings on June.
I never said anything about removing our Mustangs. Our team is called the MUSTANGS not the PONIES!!!
Re: Ramblings on June.Find Blackoutpony and read his signature. It has all the info as to why Peruna is better than some Gelding.

Re: Ramblings on June.
Good lord I am going to regret this… we're clear on the fact that Peruna is not a mustang, correct? Stallion doesn't think I'm a stinkin' genius anymore.
Re: Ramblings on June.Personally, I think JJ thought everything would fall into place without much work on his part. The crowds, the QBs, the WRs, the wins, the bowl games, etc. And he was right up to a 7-8 game level, but his rising disappointment with the failure of these improvements and our fan's increasing expectations have led us to where we are today. I still find it amazing that some call for a major losing season just to rid themselves of JJ. I don't see JJ here after this year or next year at the most. And certainly don't see an extension in his future. Yes, a horrible season would seal the deal, but I think it's sealed already and a horrible season would be tough on the kids and the profile.

Correct. Neither are Geldings that are taught to bow. Leader of the Band-itos.

Re: Ramblings on June. Before I even finish reading through this thread I want to say that there is nothing wrong with a rainbow. That is probably something important to the culture of a people. A rainbow may be one thing to your culture but entirely something else to another culture. Keep away from stripping a culture of their ways and beliefs. Just look at the history of us who are Indigenous Americans and what has been lost through stripping the cultures. Some of our neighbouring tribes used flaming rainbows. There was a Flaming Rainbow University.
And once again lately I had to find video with Doris McClemore and what happens to cultures when forced to forget who they are. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2B4pSQFsuT0 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doris_McLemore Keep your traditions and be who you are. If new ones develop then fine. As far as JJ, he is probably not who he thought he was. Last edited by alyssa on Wed Oct 02, 2013 4:28 pm, edited 1 time in total.
