The Reality Is

Postby Dwan » Sat Oct 05, 2013 4:14 pm

That was a highly entertaining game on national TV against a quality BCS opponent. They lost to a ranked Fresno State team and beat and SEC team in Arkansas.

I'll take it.

I'm so used to seeing this university get embarrassed on national TV for the past 25 years, that a close entertaining game against a solid team is something I can live with. Call it battered wife syndrome if you will, but you are right, I have been battered as an SMU fan for the last 25 years.

Attendance? Know your history. In the glory days of the pony express when were ranked in the top 10 and playing in an elite conference and playing at Texas stadium, we averaged about 25k a game. When we played Texas, A&M, or Arknasas, we'd draw about 50k, half of whom were fans of the visiting team.

The future? I have no faith as long as Turner is the president. In the last 2O years this school has nailed one coaching hire, Larry Brown. And Larry Brown is a hall of fame coach, who won a NCAA and NBA title and he had to call us and beg for the job....and we said no until it was him or nobody. And he wanted the job so bad that he did not tell us to go to hell after we turned our nose at him.

There has been one university employee post the DP who wanted to and knew what it would take to make us a player in men's basketball and football. That was Steve Orsini and he was fired. Sure fire June Jones, but you are naive to think that is the problem. June has lost interest. And he lost interest because he knows that this is an impossible situation.

the only concern is I wonder how many people changed channels when we were getting blown out and missed the come back.

I'm watching Cal vs Washington State...Harper, the WR from Cal just scored and Marks the WR from WSU is making plays. Both were SMU commits at one point

Be negative if you must, but GG, Rambo and the rest of the kids made me proud. Am I upset they couldn't hold, yes, but I had given up several times. They didn't.

I stopped and only knew about it because my uncle called and told me to turn it back on

+1 except I don't think JJ lost interest. If he had, he wouldn't have brought in Hal and Brown.

It was a good game. Glad ESPN showed the whole game and didn't break away to other programming when the game ran into OT. The uniforms looked super and we even got to see Peruna. Looking forward to Memphis..

You're right about attendance, too. Back in the 1970s we were drawing 13, 000 for many home games. Mustang Mania did not fill the seats like some folks might think (nostalgia has a way of inflating things).

There is much work to be done at SMU.

Mustang Mania filled the seats-but Mustang Mania only lasted from 1978-1981-then Russ Potts left-Brad Thomas was pushed aside-and there was little promotion after that

Orsini had some fire, but the only good hire as you say was opposed viamently bu Orsini. He was hard to work with internally.

Rick hart can make his mark on this school by finding a great young coach and staff to take us up a notch. Up to him now.

Rutgers isn't a decent team... They' were wounded from injuries and have a terrible strategy to winning game by playing conservatively, but I can agree the kids played til the end but they must must know how to play 4 quarters against every team and if they do, they will come...

Plus, Orsini did not want to hire Larry Brown. And he gave Doh a guaranteed extension. Steve was not a great AD.

Orsini couldn't run a coaching search to save his life. He was good for a lot of things, but he wasn't the end-all-and-be-all. Bull in a china shop.
