Re: Keeping up with the JonsesYeah, the writer glossed over the bit about G2 being one of the top QBs in the nation (at least statistically), but pretty clever nonetheless.
"It's a couple hundred million dollars. I'm not losing sleep over it." -- David Miller
Re: Keeping up with the JonsesOK disagree with that type of article in student newspaper-poor analysis and journalism I would expect from SmuAlumni11
Agree that GG is having a better year But stop with the BS that GG is anything more than an average college QB throwing mostly 5 yard uncontested completions. He has been mediocre with some stats that are inflated,. His poor QB rating and Yards per Catch tell a very different story. If he can throw the ball downfield like he did late in the Rutgers game without making the mistakes that have plagued his career then you can start talking about him being an above average college QB. Right now he is not "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: Keeping up with the JonsesI'm glad to see this level of passion from a current student. We all don't have to agree on everything he wrote, but at least the cares enough to say it.
Re: Keeping up with the Jonses
Why the hate stallion, i didnt think I would ever get recognition from you whether its negative or positive, haha. I will however disagree with you and agree with the majority of the fanbase that if you were to name one person on the team thats worth anything: It's GG. His stats would be reflective of our WRs inability to get open, stand around and pick dandelions or drop passes when they miraculously get open. Is GG a Manziel caliber? Absolutely not, but if he actually had the WRs Padron and Jerry Jones McDermott had then I think this season would be singing a different tune, especially having a meatier O-Line and D-Line. Also in regards to your down the field comment, I think thats a JJ tactic to go for the "safe" horizontal passes and let our sub-par, slow WR gain 2 yards a catch. Thats my perspective/witness to our season as I have watched every game from stands or tv. Now to the article, this was a hoot, besides of course the GG bashing. I still dont think Rick Hart has the intention to fire JJ. He's been distracting the community by jerseys and beer to deter the hatred to JJ. I think sadly JJ will ride out his contract depsite the negative consequences of keeping him here. I dont understand the argument that keeping him and behind closed doors is a benefit. He has no worthy mentioned recruits. Our team really is nothing to care about when it comes to the talent level. They can submit transfer requests but the only acceptance they would get is D-2 teams. Also ECM, i think his comment to MSU's endowment fund was indicating that this is a school that doesnt have the funds to really support the school as well as a football program. I think he was insulting our admin and program for having the resources yet not able to compete with big teams and get pushed around schools who dont even have the money to compete.
Re: Keeping up with the JonsesJune reads this, is shocked b/c everyone around him had to him the students wanted to build him statues, resigns immediately.
Re: Keeping up with the Jonses
Harvard's endowment is $32.7 billion, about 30x as much as ours. I'd like to think we could beat them in football though. He was just being a [deleted], it wasn't funny, and it reflected poorly on the paper it was printed in and the student body. 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
Re: Keeping up with the Jonses
Do I have to tattoo this on my [deleted] forehead? Rick Hart can't "fire" JJ w/o the approval of the CoC. They hold the purse strings, and if they're tired of June and his on-field performance, he'll be gone. Stop blaming Rick, it's not really his call at this point. 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
Re: Keeping up with the JonsesI didnt really have an expectation that a student would be modest or humble especially a sophmore frat guy at SMU. However, Harvard doesnt have the desire to be a football program. If they wanted to though, I think they could blow us out of the water, especially in our state, in less than 5 years. The thing with being a northeastern prestige school, their desire is to be the top research school in the country. They want to be the 5 school every year for their entire lifetime. For us, we are probably more weighted on academics but we still contribute alot of funding to the football program hence why we are a FBS school, but sadly struggling to just hold the mid-tier title.
I understand the CoC thing, but I feel Rick should at least say hes displeased with the season, show some frustration, because from what I am seeing is complacency. I'm glad he is trying to reach out to the community to other things but our biggest problem is the guy in the black shirt and his cronies. I just hope hes actively pursuing and talking to CoC to getting him fired and replaced quickly.
Re: Keeping up with the Jonsesfunny article.. and I agree the GG thing could have been omitted.
Re: Keeping up with the Jonses
I agree that it probably isn't Hart's call, and because of the finances involved, I don't think JJ will be dismissed, whether we go 1-11 or 8-4 or anywhere in between. I simply can't imagine the school pulling the trigger on a move like that, because the AAC money and much of the endowment money already have been earmarked for other things. I'll even predict that the next coach, whenever he arrives, makes less, maybe a lot less, than JJ. Because of that, I'm still not sure if a move should be made or not. I'm no more excited about the record than anyone else, but I want to know the alternative before deciding on JJ. As for the article, it's like the written version of the Ticket: attempted shock value without legitimate content, dressed up with enough jokes that a couple of them are almost funny. Calling Gilbert UT's "sloppy seconds" is childish and lazy, by the writer and by the paper for allowing that to be printed (and he's a lot better than what they're rolling out in Austin now) ... the Arizona State thing was handled poorly, but it also is so old and ridiculous. It's still hard to imagine that people would prefer the coaches we had before who lost so much that no other team ever even called. The "writer" is saying we should have beaten Tech and/or A&M and/or TCU because he teased some students who ended up there in high school? Is that supposed to be impressive? And then he feels foolish for choosing SMU ... and that somehow is JJ's fault? Only an idiot is ashamed of his school because of what happens on the football field or on the basketball court or in the swimming pool or on the golf course, and he's not a member of those teams. I never played a minute for any SMU team, and I'm infinitely proud of my alma mater, and that won't change whether we lose every game in every sport win the conference and go to a BCS bowl.
Re: Keeping up with the JonsesWell said '81. The author of that article is a poor representation of our student body. Not sure why so many on here are defending him and acting like the article is anything other than a trainwreck.
You could write a legitimate takedown of June Jones and the need to dismiss him without being crass, tearing down players, and making jokes that are painfully unfunny. 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
Re: Keeping up with the Jonses
On the last paragraph I couldn't disagree more. I've never played a down of SMU football or any sport at SMU. But it is still embarrassing that we are mediocre at best at one of the things I hold very important in my life (athletics). We all know SMU is a pretty good school academically and we all know that's more important than sports and we all benefit way more from SMU education than from its sports teams, but come on am I really going to talk crap to my buddy from home about how we are smarter here at SMU then CSU? No way. Am I really going to go to the bar this weekend and talk crap to my buddy from Tech about how we are smarter? Nope. It's a big deal to be able to brag about your school, and like it or not football is ultimate bragging rights. It makes my school seem superior if we win in football, which is something academics (unless your IVY) just cant do to the normal common american guy in his 20's. People make fun of SMU, even if they are from way worse schools academically because of football and basketball (not now) and attendance. My family is mostly from Oklahoma State and they all make fun of me every gathering for my school, and we all know SMU is a way better school academically. But my rebutle can't be "well we are smarter". But that's just how it is. And that IS embarrassing. That all being said Ill still be at every game rooting for us as hard as ever.
Re: Keeping up with the Jonses
My sources are telling me this is June's final season at SMU....we'll see. C-ya @ Milos!
Re: Keeping up with the JonsesI'm sorry 81 but I completely disagree - athletics (especially football) are a huge source of pride for most alums, ex-players and the entire community at any university or college. If they are a source of pride, they can also become a source of embarrassment.
Personally - I have SMU stuff all over my office. Helmet, framed ED jersey, etc. And I work with mostly ACC/SEC alums - and we talk a lot of football. If athletics were not a huge source of pride, why do so many boosters/alums break the rules in order to win?
