Just as devil's advocate I would suggest the competition they faced was at a different level also.

Yes, but then you would be hiring a coach who could not win against good competition, which is a quality i would not be excited about in a head football coach!

What about Willie Fritz at Sam Houston State?

36-11 in 3 1/2 years there, including two appearances in the FCS national championship game. He would be 54 next season.

I hope Hart's list looks something like this:

Morris
Smart
Petrino
Monty
Herman
Gray

We can't get Morris or Smart, I don't think. Both are paid well at their current gigs and will likely have their pick of P5 jobs as soon as this offseason. I think Kirby is waiting for Saban to retire and then takeover at Alabama.

Petrino would be awesome but RGT and the board would never sign off on that.

I like Montgomery, but people have brought up some legitimate questions about his recruiting. I think we can all agree that our next HC needs to be an excellent recruiter.

My biggest question about Jerry Gray is his ability to recruit. He's only been a college asst. coach for one season

there is a incorrect assumption that a lot of people are making. The Head Coach in College Football is pretty strictly limited in recruiting. Rules are different in Basketball. Seriously, I'm more worried about a Head Coach recruiting the right assistants than I'm worried about a Head Coach that can recruit the right players. In College Football the Head Coach is the face of the program and the closer not the guy out there chasing down the top recruits. Usually, the Coordinators as well are more supervisory than hands-on in recruiting. Its recruiting the right personnel at the other 6-7 positions that makes recruiting success. The Head Coach sets the public tone and closes mostly on campus by the way. The recruiters get the recruits to campus for the Head Coach to close.

Here's a summary of just one aspect of the limitations on Head Coaches v. Assistants-there are others-CONTACTS:

Contacts ~ A face-to-face encounter between a prospect and/or their family and coaching staff members.
 Coaches are limited to six in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts (including contact with family).
 One contact per prospect is permitted during each week of the contact period. All contacts occurringon the same day (12:01 a.m. to midnight) shall count as one contact.
 The head coach is permitted one contact

I should add that "being the face of a program" ie selling the program to the university, alumni, fans and community is very much a different but essential form of recruiting.

Justin Wilcox, the DC at Washington as head coach and he brings Tosh Lupoi, currently the DL coach at Washington and one of the best recruiters in the country as his DC. Wilcox will get a BCS head coaching job in the next 2-4 years. He is young, dynamic, an excellent recruiter and a great coach. Was the DC at Tennessee and Boise State before coming to Washington.

I agree with Stallion. I see the Head Coach more as a CEO type of coach these days.

That is why I kept shaking my head when people would scream for Klemm as head coach. Forget the fact he had no experience as a head coach and very little as an assistant, you would have been taking your top recruiter and put him on the bench.

Willie Fritz at SHSU has won everywhere's he been (DII and FCS) and wouldn't break the bank. If he could get some legit assistants that can recruit Texas that could be a solid option.

What about Greg Schiano? He's going to get canned by the Bucs. His rah rah style obviously doesn't work in the NFL, but look what he did with Rutgers. Rutgers was a POS before he got there and he essentially got the program into the Big Ten. He can recruit as well.

Starting in '02 his class rankings from Rivals were 47, 45, 81, 68, 42, 37, 46, 38, 64

I think not looking at Schiano would be foolish. He's basically the anti-June which is what a lot of us have been clamoring for

If he gets fired, why would he look at SMU? He'll enjoy his NFL severance before hopping back in at a ACC or Big 10 HC job.
