Beating less than .500 teamsIf SMU could just make all the OOC games against less than .500 teams SMU could go 4-0 and make a bowl every year. One thing June can do well most of the time is beat losing teams.

Re: Beating less than .500 teamsI personally think if we played TCU and 3 cupcakes, started out 3-1 this year, and were 6-2 after Temple, we would overall draw a higher average attendance since more people would be interested. Instead, we start out 1-4, and nobody cares the rest of the year. Starting out 3-1, getting 10 wins, would draw much more interest in the program.
Re: Beating less than .500 teams
With the talent and coaching that is in place there aren't many teams that would be cupcakes for us. Upgrade the talent and then we won't have to be scared of facing good teams. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: Beating less than .500 teamsbecause we are in a cup cake conference. so the conclusions is only play cupcakes and many on the board will be delighted.
Re: Beating less than .500 teams
We lost aGainst a Mediocre TCU team this year...because or team decided being up 10-7 was enough...ughhhh!!!! We were supposed to blow out TCU especially how they have been playing this year! I thought it was going to be 31-17 SMU
Re: Beating less than .500 teamsOk that's ridiculous.

Re: Beating less than .500 teams
I'm going to agree with Stallion on this.
Re: Beating less than .500 teamsYes, I agree (and yes, I know I will get flamed). Win/loss record is all that matters right now. Look at Houston. They have played absolutely nobody and there was talk of them being ranked if they beat BYU.
Play TCU and north Texas and then absolute duds in OOC (SFA is a good option as one). It's a joke that anyone would think we could even be remotely competitive with a Baylor or aTM right now. Stupidity to play them right now. Get your W-L record up (more than 6 or 7 wins), create some buzz, and then go from there. That's the "next step" formula.
Re: Beating less than .500 teamsThe difference is that a 5-0 UH doesn't crap down its leg when it plays legit opponents like BYU. 5-1 SMU vs. So.Miss?...epic meltdown. You can mask how uncompetitive we are but as soon as we play legitimate teams we'll be exposed. I don't see the advantage of tricking people to get hype, then not being able to step up to take advantage of it. Talk me through this...
Re: Beating less than .500 teamsBYU is not very good. And we hung with a 7-0 TT team that is very good.
I can't believe anyone on here is actually defending UH. They are not very good and their record is extremely inflated. We'll see who's better when we play them I guess. But I'd take their schedule all day long right now.
Re: Beating less than .500 teamsDefending UH?!? I just implied they are a good team who hung around in a shoot-out, and nearly best another good team. We beat a 1-4 team and barely edged a FCS school; what about this team makes you think we can buck our abysmal record against 0.500+ teams?
Re: Beating less than .500 teams
We'd probably have 3 losses with their schedule. The problem with hiding behind junk is it doesn't work all that well when your team is junk too. Upgrade the talent and we won't need to fear good teams. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: Beating less than .500 teamsWe whip lesser teams because the fact is June is a better X's and O's coach than most he faces. But the classic June critique - he doesn't recruit and we lack the talent to compete in an upper echelon - is what puts a ceiling on how high we can go.
But one of the problems we face in terms of scheduling is that we need the check - or at least we need some help. Any reasonably easy team we could schedule won't bring fans or nobody cares about - MONTANA STATE; unless you want to play UNT again. So while I'm certainly open to an easier OOC schedule it comes with conditions.
Re: Beating less than .500 teams
You know, we do play you at the end of the year. BYU is 5-2 including a 40-21 win over the whorns and a 38-20 win over Georgia Tech, who beat Syracuse 58-0 yesterday. Our true freshman qb was able to keep their star linebacker, who is a projected 1st round pick (Could have been a 1st round pick in the previous draft but decided to retrun for his senior year) away from him by spinning and twisting out of his grasp numerous times. Nobody has scored more than 21 on BYU all year, we scored 46 on their defense. I'm not one for coulda woulda shoulda but if we make at least one of the two missed goals or if the receiver holds on to the 2 pt conversion catch or if we don't throw a pick at the end of the game when we driving at the last minute, we would have walked out of Reliant with a W and a 6-0 record. I thank many of you who have praised us but honest question to Ojaipony, how do you HONESTLY think SMU would have done against BYU today? We have a good chance to win the AAC this year and will bounce back this weekend when we go up to Rutgers to spoil their homecoming.
