Why aren't we cheating?Honest question- with the amount of $ some of our boosters have, and with the lack of any real consequences from the NCAA- why aren't we paying recruits?
Miami received their penalty today for the Nevin Shapiro mess....a whopping 9 scholarships over a 3 year period. They did self impose a 2 year bowl ban- which really doesn't matter if you happen to stink at that point anyway. Let's go back to pony excess. Why not? We have the means.
Re: Why aren't we cheating? If you ain't cheating you ain't trying.
Re: Why aren't we cheating? The Miami penalties were an absolute farce. Lack of institutional control was easily identified and they got off with a 'bad boy, please don't do that again' type of penalty.
Re: Why aren't we cheating?UCF basically got away with murder as well.... Nothing is happening to Bama right now, The money badger got a slap on the wrist, I don't think the NCAA cares too much, but I'm also pretty sure if we did get in trouble again, football would probably cease to exist at SMU... forever
BOP - Providing insensitivity training for a politically correct world since 1989.
Re: Why aren't we cheating?the ncaa is a joke and is on its way out. they will soon no longer have a say over any football matters. they still control basketball and skim a lot of money off the tournament.
Re: Why aren't we cheating? At the very least, in our next coaching search, don't be scared off of hiring a great recruiter and possibly best HC candidate because he has some issues in the past. I've been saying That for awhile.
Bowl ban self imposed is pretty significant though, IMO. Beat the hell out of anybody!
Re: Why aren't we cheating? It's only significant if you're bowl eligible that particular year. Otherwise, it's not even a penalty.
Re: Why aren't we cheating?
Would have to be a huge drop off for them not to be eligible. And also, it will further hurt recruiting. I'm not saying in sum, that they got what they deserved, just that 2 bowls is nothin to sneeze at. Beat the hell out of anybody!
Re: Why aren't we cheating? The message is little harm to the school, just throw the coach under the bus.
![]() Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
Re: Why aren't we cheating?Per unwritten NCAA rules, you must generate X amount of dollars and/or have an enrollment over X amount to qualify for the alternate "slap on the wrist" penalties. We're not big enough to cheat. We get the primary "must be overly harsh to balance out the BS crap we handed out to Johnny Hancock" penalties. Let Rice get caught doing what Miami did and see what happens.
Re: Why aren't we cheating?USC fans must be more than a little upset. They lost 30 scholarships because of 1 player'a actions. Miami lost 9 schollies, but the investigation revealed that improper benefits were given to 118 athletes over a long period of time.
What a joke.
Re: Why aren't we cheating? You don't think deadbeat programs like TCU and Baylor aren't cheating? They are! There would be no way for those schools to be in the big 12 otherwise.
Where the heck's our Slush Fund!!???!??!?!?!
Re: Why aren't we cheating? We should make an announcement that in light of the fact that there are no significant consequences in cheating anymore, SMU will now go ahead and start cheating again.
Unbelievably funny but would never happen. Even if we did it only to make a statement. I wish our school had some edge to it...ESPN would love it. And so agree, the fact that we haven't sued for selective enforcement is a joke and a huge blunder by our administration. Probably has cost this school BILLIONS in financial/tuition losses. Re: Why aren't we cheating? You know the NCAA will be visiting our hoops program soon. Where-ever Larry goes, the NCAA follows. So, be careful what you wish for. Let's at least make a hoops run because we flip the finger at the NCAA.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: Why aren't we cheating? The NCAA is remarkably consistent, admit you screwed up, take responsibility for your actions, clean things up for a while and you will get a slap on the wrist (Ohio State, Miami). Claim you did nothing wrong and turn your nose up at the NCAA, you will get hammered (USC,SMU)
