How hot is June's seat?
Scenarios which June gets fired
1. 6-6 w/ bowl loss
2. Obviously 5-7 or less
3. If SMU would have lost to Montana state
4. 6-6
5. Loss to temple today
Who would smu hire??????

Re: How hot is June's seat?
As JasonB pointed out 6-6 would be disappointing. And since June has already sold his house in Plano there is probably something already in the works to replace him as he retires or resigns from SMU. But Hawaii could hire him back if they fire their coach this year.

hot to very hot
Re: How hot is June's seat?
I can't really believe that the university would fire JJ if he leads SMU to a fifth straight bowl game. SMU, of all places, in 5 straight bowls after two decades of nothing even close to a bowl? True, the bowls we have been to haven't been the BCS national championship. We all want better bowls, but that's not the point. The point is that if JJ leads us to another bowl, even with a 6-6 record, it's hard to imagine the school would make a change. Honestly, if a change is made, I think it will be his call, not SMU's call. I just can't see the school pulling the trigger after he got us back into the bowl conversation.

It is all about money. Do we have the money to fire him? How much money does his bowl games produce? What do the big donors want? These are the questions that determine what the school's position will be. For Coach Jones, I assume it depends on what kind of severance he can negotiate combined with what new job he can get and it's income. The seat is hot, but without the resources it is only a rhetorical hot.

For 6-6 scenario to happen we must win one of the following games;Hoofprint wrote:I can't really believe that the university would fire JJ if he leads SMU to a fifth straight bowl game. Look Corso no one is saying BCS national championship or even a BCS regular bowl but at least a good non BCS bowl. You ever thought that it could be a mutual agreement that both sides part? It has probably already been done so get over it.Hoofprint wrote:I can't really believe that the university would fire JJ if he leads SMU to a fifth straight bowl game. I thought mustangabu was JJ but I must have been mistaken as clearly it must be you! Or that stupid son. Either way, how can you possibly be satisfied with the mediocre bowls, losing all the big and important games for growth. I mean sadly you must have the mind set of the CoC "OMG if we fire JJ we will never make it back to the beef o Brady like bowl ever again!!" You might as well not even have a football program with a thought process like that. Look at UCF, that's a true up and coming school always have been. The can compete with some of the best SEC schools: south Carolina and Georgia... We can't even compete against first year QB Texas tech team, or a really down year TCU... Are only historic win which looks like a joke now was that tcu game... I'm sick of the poor return JJ has brought us and sick of the loser minded heads at smu.Hoofprint wrote:I can't really believe that the university would fire JJ if he leads SMU to a fifth straight bowl game. We did beat Tulsa last year so I think Cincinnati and Houston are possible. If UCF loses another game before they face us then maybe we can beat them, but not if it is for a BCS bowl bid.Statler wrote:For 6-6 scenario to happen we must win one of the following games;Hoofprint wrote:I can't really believe that the university would fire JJ if he leads SMU to a fifth straight bowl game. Re: How hot is June's seat?
I think that San Antonio Mustang had it right. In part he said, "It is all about money. . . What do the big donors want?. . These are the questions that determine what the school's position will be. "
In other threads it has been noted that funding by the CoC may not continue. That seems reasonable. Whether or not they continue or if they don't again, I will always admire them for the personal success that gave them the ability to fund what may be the last effort to revive SMU football - and their decision to do so.
The points above are more important than a 5 - 7 record or and 6 - 7 record with a bowl loss or even a highly improbable series of events that would see SMU in a BCS bowl. I agree that the fact that JJ has sold his Dallas residence is significant. Something is going on.
I was never so taken with JJ as some on this board and also some of my (non SMU) friends but one thing I will remember from his coaching era was the victory over Pitt in the BBVA. Never mind that it was a small bowl and that the opponent was in disarray. We beat a team in a bowl that we had played in better days and won. I'll thank Jones and his staff for that memory.
One thing I have to wonder. This year, for perhaps the first and probably the only time in JJ's career his team is in a BCS conference. I personally think that his desire to play again a team like Georgia in a big bowl led to him taking the SMU job and thinking about the job in Arizona. His situation this year might be different if he had a different approach to recruiting.
I wonder if he thinks about that?

Re: How hot is June's seat?
Let me offer the limited defense of June I've said before: June is our Moses, and he deserves our thanks for that. He led us out of the captivity of suckitude, but he can't take us to the promised land. He was likely the best we could have done at the time, and he gave the program an important boost. Without June we might still be in C-USA, but he should have been out of here after the ASU debacle.SMU_Alumni11 wrote:I thought mustangabu was JJ but I must have been mistaken as clearly it must be you! He didn't help his case with the leis, geldings, black unis, and references to "SMU University." Looks like Peruna 1 -- JJ O.

If he has sold his house -there u go.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Re: How hot is June's seat?
The interesting thing about the sale of his house is the timing. IIRC that house sale was completed last June. Well before the start of this season. I suspect he had already decided to leave at the end of this year. Kind of proves out the idea that he has already checked out and is just biding his time til the end of the season.

Re: How hot is June's seat?
We weren't in shambles before June...we just weren't...June brought us into relevancy in more ways than one but it's not like he did anything another good coach couldn't have also done. Drop this miracle-worker junk.
