Homecoming Disaster - Worst Fans in Country?

Postby Treadway21 » Sun Oct 27, 2013 1:14 am

Quit blaming the fans ! What little of us are left. 25 years of crap and people are poed that the fans don't care that we have to come back against Temple ? Temple. Do you hear your selves. Please. Get real. When your are proud you beat Temple then there is something wrong. I am as proud an SMU fan as anyone, but the fans aren t the problem. The product is the problem and the who we play is the problem.

When it was nut crunch time, the fans cheered and yelled and helped the team pull thru. The reason there isn't any one there is we've been killed by a bunch of Texas teams, we're afraid to play Baylor, and had won two games and we're playing Temple who has won 1 game. And we get behind 28-7 and look like complete crap on the first half. Yes blame the fans.

I have 2 words to say to y'all: F off,

doesn't care who wins.

Those who say SMU is "peddling garbage" are a bunch of asses. I really resent any jerk who says this football team is garbage. These kids are trying hard, and damn this game was exciting - even if it was against Temple.

And, yes, there is something wrong with the damn "fans" on the Boulevard, and no it's not the football product. Turner has created a competing product which appeals to many people. Perhaps selling alcohol in the stands will help the situation. If SMU can find a way to put the Boulevard in Ford, then the problem is solved.

Homecoming Disaster - Worst Fans in Country?

BS. A and m could have scored any number they wanted on us. temple is one of the worst teams in college football. TCU embarrasses us in the second half. Please. You expect people to show up and watch a 2 winSMU team play a 1 win Temple team. Maybe if we are in the middle of nowhere, but the is a lot of better things to do in Dallas than take 41/2 hours to beat temple.

My personal rant:

I invested in season tickets. I invested my body and time to this program. But I no longer support JJ and his half assed approach to this program. At least previous coaches were all in. I will comeback to games when we have a coach that cares. That being said I support the players and what they are doing and the the sacrifices they are putting in. I just refuse to show up and support a coach that doesn't want to be here

I'm sorry that you found today to be garbage. I enjoyed it. And I think it is worth noting that yes, Temple are not good, but GG put up the seventh most yards by one player in NCAA history. Even if you just take the 5 worst teams in FBS, they each play 12 games a year, meaning 60 teams a year play against crappy teams, going back over the span of those top seven performances (1990 to today) that is over 1300 games. And that is just talking about the worst 5 teams.

I would also point out Houston only beat them by 9. Notre dame by 22, and the most they had given up was 30.

My point is, I understand where you are coming from but I really think we saw something special today.

And I read that had Gilbert not taken a knee twice we would have had 100+ yards rushing making him only the second player ever with 500+ passing and 100+ rushing yards.

It was a great performance worthy of the price of admission.

Glad you pointed that out and since at the moment I can't respond to all posts til I get to my comp or charge this dying phone but why in the hell did jj not put another QB in so GG could have the stats especially after all GG has done, I think that's a pretty crappy way to treat your one and only star player...

It was a great second half, but going down 21 points to a team that got donkeypunched by Idaho is not a recipe for excitement. We did the same garbage against Rutgers. I give the entire team a ton of credit for fighting back and winning that game. Defensively we've got to figure out some stuff in the bye week.
Back off Warchild seriously.

What I would like to know is who is gave the locker room speech that the team came back and fought. We know Jones doesn't give a care. Did ED go and convince them they can play or did Mumme? How embarrassing for ED they put him on Jumbotron right before half as a great legend, and we are getting our butts beat by Temple.

You can call me an [deleted] all you want but the empty seats say the same thing. Nobody but us few want to buy what SMU is selling. At some point you've got to realize it's not the consumers' fault.

I had a great time yesterday. Honestly, I could of lived without parts of it, but who couldn't? As most of you can't help but know, I don't care much for June's coaching and play calling strategies. Our team remains undisciplined and still make high school mistakes (the downed punts). I also want our defense to improve significantly. But, if you missed the 2nd half of yesterday's game then you missed out. Plus, the presentation highlighting Mustangs in the NFL was AWESOME. Gilbert was AWESOME! It was great and I left happy yesterday! I'm sure the students that stayed and supported their classmates left happy too.

An argument could be made that we have the BEST fans in the country. we have a small loyal following that has suffered through bad to mediocre football for 25 years now, but has continued to support the program despite the fact that our former SWC mates are all kicking sand in our faces. the problem isn't our fans, and it isn't anyone who cares enough about SMU to spend time on this board. As many have pointed out, it's the students and alumni who just visit the Boulevard for pre-game cocktails with no intention of attending the game and supporting our team. I assume those same alumni never (or rarely) attended a game while they were students. I agree with the earlier comment somebody made about it "being our culture"

It's disappointing because those of us hanging out on this board really care about SMU athletics and we all follow college football so we know what it takes to be relevant; I'm sure we were all very thankful when Ownby was replaced by Ford Stadium. I thought 32k was a perfect size and envisioned SMU, with a competitive product on the field, could enjoy consistent crowds of 20 - 25k which looks respectable in Ford. It's embarrassing to tune into our "national" broadcast and see no more than 5,000 people in the east side stands and endzone, which is typically what the viewing audience sees.

Those of you who are seemingly hyper-sensitive to these threads and get all offended need to know YOU aren't the ones being attacked. It's your classmates and former classmates who like to participate in Homecoming activities...except for the football game. I watched that game yesterday and wondered whether this was the lowest attendance we've had for Homecoming since the death penalty. haven't taken the time to research that, but my initial reaction is that with 15k announced and what looked like no more than 10-12 actually in attendance, we just may have bottomed out yesterday. AND...as many of you have pointed out, it's a shame because that was a very entertaining game. Kind of reminded me of the 1st post death penalty game against NTSU (or had they already become UNT?) when Romo lead SMU to a shootout win.

I think I can fix our problem...if we can't bribe players, maybe we can bribe the media into disseminating the wrong game time...say kick-off is two hours after it actually is. Then what casual fans do come, will think we play lights-out can't wait to come back, meanwhile loyal fans that know the true kickoff time get to see an exciting, furious come-back after patiently sitting through two hours of bad football. Solved.

If SMU keeps putting 50+ points up on the scoreboard and keeps winning games (no matter if it is TEMPLE) some new fans will come out. In fact, big offensive numbers and winning games will fill the stands. Those people on the blvd that do not show for games are not interested in SMU football. Forget them. They are there for social reasons. However, plenty of prospective fans live in the Dallas area. SMU just has to figure out how to get them involved. SMU admin. needs ideas but doesn't realize it. I wish there was a way to get ideas to them...maybe a contest or a suggestion box.

Nonetheless, the Homecoming game this year was fantastic.
