Longtime wrote:I wish someone with the skilz could put together a YouTube video of SMU mentions and appearances in TV and film. It would be impressive. For a little ol' private school in Texas, SMU has had more than its share of shots and shout-outs in Movies and TV.
These are the ones I could think of off the top of my head:
Born of the Fourth of July Talk Radio Seniors (Dennis Quaid's first movie, and Animal House ripoff) Mars Needs Women (scenes from an SMU-Baylor football game at the Cotton Bowl!) Jerry Maguire (SMU is the alma mater of "Cush" the hotshot QB - you see a poster of him in an SMU uniform in the backgroung) The West Wing (SMU is the president's alma mater) Dallas (countless episodes showing Lucy Ewing on campus) Gilligan's Island (one of The Professor's degrees is from SMU...he lists an alphabet soup of alma maters) Celebrity (an NBC mini-series in the 1980s)
I'm sure there are many more references to SMU. It would be fun to see them compiled in one video.
great list. of course, Walker Texas Ranger filmed on campus a few times. JFK also had a few framing shot I believe.

Correction, I was thinking of this movie, The Big Show from 1936: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0027361/Not sure if it shows the school, but it does have the SMU band playing as "The SMU 50". Also in this movie is the Lightcrust Doughboys, who would cut an album with the SMU band 60 years later in the 1990s, 'The High Road on the Hilltop" Featuring such lyrics as "Hey [deleted] [deleted] [deleted] [deleted], where can you be"

Forgot about Problem Child. Growing up, the guy who played the warden in that movie lived down the street. I remember as a little kid seeing a movie being filmed at a park down the street from me at the baseball field, and finding out later it was the Tball scene in that movie.
If anyone is curious, the guy who played the warden also did the voice of LBJ in JFK and Forrest Gump.

I watched that Big Show movie. Looks like the entire thing was filmed at Fair Park and somewhere in LA. Anyways, there's a big scene for the "opening day" of the fair, and sure enough, there's the Mustang Band, marching around the main area (esplanade?) up to the Hall of States. Kinda cool, and I can ever figure it out, I'd love to throw it on youtube.
Sent from my Motorola brick.

SMU is referenced in the Tommy Lee Jones movie, "Man of the House." His daughter tells him at dinner that she is applying to Rice and SMU

was Debbie does Dallas even set in Dallas, let alone filmed here? I thought the whole point was that she was trying to get here. Not that I've seen that particular movie...or any movie of that genre...

Billy on Melrose Place went to SMU. It was mentioned in at least one episode. Meh.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Now that you mention it, I think he worked in several SMU references in his various series.

I've known for years about SMU being in the "Mars Needs Women" movie. It was filmed in Dallas and includes a small bit of the game in 1966 when SMU beat Baylor 24----22. It starts at about 60:30 into the movie and goes for a few minutes. Ponyboy reminded me of the movie when he said in another thread that he was born in 1966. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NwWyDj7JGg
