Re: I love Rambo
OK, not trying to drudge up the topic again but thought this to be interesting considering where we went with this thread. My high school football team is playing the final game in our old stadium tonight. For a send off they invited back every student who ever attended the school since its origination in I believe 1922.
Past teams were to be recognized and various other activities. Kind of like homecoming on steroids.
The invited alums were asked to sit on the visitor side since the team we were playing was from a distance and not bringing many fans. Needless to say the place is packed. Unfortunately I was not able to attend but I got some updates. 42-0 in the first quarter. 59-7 in the 2nd at last update. Probably going to get sued for bullying.
Now I am not sure how good the opposing team is. Obviously they are not real good. But I have to believe that the crowd, the pomp, the electricity, etc. contributed to this game and what will be very much a lopsided victory in front of probably the largest crowd they have ever had. (Please do not try to compare crowd sizes, this is Arkansas not Texas)
Update: 62-7 at half. 68-7 final. I think we dodged a bullying charge.

It's a lot of pressure and responsibility being a Mustang fan: give annually to the AD or they can't afford new jerseys and will run out of the tunnel in last year's patched up version, promote SMU like heck because our advertising consists to 2-3 non-descript billboards, but up all the crappy merch in the grocery because no one else will, in hopes that they'll eventually get better stuff...oh, and make sure you bring 17,000 friends with you to the game or the kids won't feel inspired to play to their full potential and you'll lose the game for us...phew!
Who wouldn't want to be part of that! Oh well, perhaps this is just part of the heavy-lifting it takes to rise above mediocrity. Give me a General that comvinces me that we're heading there!

Burden of a small private school . . . in football. I don't know any other small private schools that are elite in college football. (Stanford, Notre Dame, and Vanderbilt are not small -- however, Stanford is just an amazing place . . . they are the standard for us to emulate IMHO). Also, there is NO single other private school in the AAC - all very large public schools (well, until Tulane joins next year anyway -- and even they are bigger than us -- not by much, but they suck anyway so not a good standard but you get my point).SMUer wrote:It's a lot of pressure and responsibility being a Mustang fan: give annually to the AD or they can't afford new jerseys and will run out of the tunnel in last year's patched up version, promote SMU like heck because our advertising consists to 2-3 non-descript billboards, but up all the crappy merch in the grocery because no one else will, in hopes that they'll eventually get better stuff...oh, and make sure you bring 17,000 friends with you to the game or the kids won't feel inspired to play to their full potential and you'll lose the game for us...phew!

Why do you think we got in so much trouble in the 80s? We tried to compete and the rules just aren't set up for us to even compete. How do you compete with the resources of a Texas? You have to be creative. In lieu of paying players, we have to pay coaches (recruiters) and have a small group of extremely devoted, hard working folks with deep pockets to even compete.
And, since I didn't go to college for a football program, I can live with this. It is what it is.
