Re: New Bowl Option
Wow. I have never seen anyone on this board compare us to TCU. Thanks. Also. I agree we are way to positive about our football program and no one seems concerned about out recruiting or coaching issues or conference issues. Good point also about having a little fun at our competitions expense. We should not have any fun whatsoever and only ridicule our own team. UNT and the University of Houston it is. Re: New Bowl OptionYou make some good points in your first paragraph; not everyone on Ponyfans is a sunshiner. I apologize, if I was redundant.
I have to disagree with your apparent attitude in regard to having fun with UNT and Houston. Fun is fun, but when it comes across as hyper-elitist and perhaps even racist, as well, it is counter-productive to attacting a larger fan base. There just aren't enough Biffs and Muffies out there to fill Ford. We're going to have to openly welcome some street rabble, if we want a crowd. Do you think Notre Dame makes fun of the economically disadvantaged or of non-wasps? Have you seen "Rudy"?

They most certainly do, at least in my experience. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: New Bowl OptionOkay, then; carry on. That snotty-little-school-on-the-hilltop image should pack 'em into Ford, right?
I give up. You people are beyond help. I went to the Rutgers game. Attractive "crowd", what few there were there.

Re: New Bowl Option"you people"? ouch!
i agree the image should change to be more inclusive. But many times the "image" and the reality are vastly different. Yes, SMU has many blue-blooded, silver-spooned Range Rover-driving rich kids. But that isn't the norm - even if it is the most widely accepted "image". Most smu kids are normal, hard working suburban raised 18-22 year olds. Many different states and counties represented at smu VS your typical state school. If anything, we are actually MORE inclusive!

Re: New Bowl Option
A "relevant football program" image will pack them into Ford. All the socioeconomic pandering in the world won't get people in this town to support an irrelevant football program. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: New Bowl OptionAgree about football relevance. But, seriously, you equate making people from different backgrounds in the Dallas community welcome at Ford with "socioecomonic pandering"?
Re: New Bowl Option
I am just having fun with you. Yes we need to be more inclusive and less snotty, but I really don't think making the 7-11 jokes are that big a deal. I can just imagine how we are ridiculed on other boards. Being nice here won't make a dimes worth of difference. By the way when Eric Dickerson posted a pict of the pony express on his twitter account done yahoo took a shot at SMU paying players. It's been 25 years and we still get that crp. Nothing we do here will change anyone's opinion of SMU. Only Larry Brown can do that. An atheist is a guy who watches a Notre Dame-SMU football game and

Re: New Bowl Option
Pointing to certain socioeconomic groups and claiming that their inclusion (as if they're currently being excluded from anything) will magically fix attendance is socioeconomic pandering. Our problems run much deeper than some people hating us for what kinds of cars our students/alums drive. We're at the point where it's a struggle just to keep our own fans (the elitist types you mentioned) from leaving the stadium to go watch other teams play. What I'm saying is that the best way to make all people in Dallas feel welcome at Ford is to provide them with a relevant football product. Land legit players, keep the OOC schedule filled with teams that Dallas wants to see and win 10+ games a year and we'll be much better equipped to draw full crowds at Ford. They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: New Bowl OptionI believe you are trying to put words in my mouth. I never pointed to certain socioeconomic groups and claimed there inclusion would magically fix our atttendance problems. I am saying that we should try not to intentionally offend any groups which might potentionally be tapped for SMU football fandom.
For instance, when I was a freshman, I went to an SMU Young Republicans meeting with a new friend from NYC, who, it turned out, was Jewish: Holocaust jokes were being told at said meeting. Neither of us ever went back. My friend eventually transferred to the U of Colorado, where he joined the ski team. True story, and I think it has a moral that is relevant to our discussion, here. I fully agree that only rabid Mustang zealots will go to Ford to see a crappy product with poor entertainment value. We absolutely must improve what we offer on the field.
