G Dwight Thorne Commits to Colorado

Postby Stallion » Fri Aug 05, 2005 4:05 pm

this was a kid (No 23 in Texas according to Texas Hoops) from Arlington Martin who I thought might fall to us but really as the recruiting season went on he got more and more offers. Other schools who had offered and were being considered were SMU, TCU, Dayton, Utah, Fresno NTSU. Familiar name Paul Graham did the recruitment for the Buffs.

Tubbs sure is having a hard time getting the local kids to commit to SMU. Tubbs sure is not delivering on his reputation as a good recruiter.

Jury still out, Newbie Billy Joe. You do not have a clue if Thorne was really being recruited by SMU or not.

I do.

He was not.

I agree. Let's give Tubbs at least a couple years before throwing him under the bus.

Well if he was not recruting the number 23 kid in Texas in our own backyard, he ought to be fired for stupidity.

Well, would you wrap up the #23 kid when you have a Top5 in the bag? That would be stupid if you only had 1 scholarship to give.

Which top 5 do we have in the bag, in your opinion, GRGB? Arthur?

JT, you're a lot smarter than that. I know this, and everyone on this site knows this. We've read your posts, and you know a lot. But you and I both know there are reasons some coaches to recruit or not to recruit a guy. Depth at his position, grades, character issues, etc. .... I don't know what -- if anything -- applies to this Thorne kid, because frankly I've never heard of him. But there are top kids on a lot of lists who don't get recruited by one school or another. Some are legit reasons, some aren't. But to suggest Coach Tubbs should get canned is just a bit premature, don't you think? Who recruited Willingham? Who recruited Fall? Who recruited Morris? Come on, JT -- you're a great PonyFan. There's no reason to bail on Coach Tubbs. He's recruited good kids, they just don't happen to be all local. Who cares?

You know if you ever read anything I've posted that I'm the biggest Tubbs apologist out there, but you also know he was recruiting this kid and lost him. Now, if we have that top 5 guy "in the bag," then why have we not heard about it?

well, because "in the bag" is recruiting talk for leaning our way, but since he is not committed nobody wants to announce him. Not that tough to figure.

Really? That's what "in the bag means" in "recruiting talk?" When they go elsewhere, does that mean the "cat's out of the bag" in recruit-speak?

I always thought in the bag meant locked up, signed, sealed and delivered. I never heard it used for "not committed."

JT, you’re simply not versed in ponyfan dialect, which includes “Player X selected SMU over OU and UT”, “this player reminds me a lot of David Pollack, a tweener with a noin-stop motor”, “Doug Flutie was short, so what?”, "we should be much improved this year"..or my personal all-time favorite from Stampede…”Great news coming”

or my favorite-"We weren't interested-Trust me!" The closer some of these people are to the coaching staff the more likely they are just spouting what they are told. Do you really think the coaching staff is going to tell them that SMU will likely go 0-98 out of the Top 100 but we do have interest from 2 little brothers of players on the team. Look SMU would likely take anybody on that list-and that's a fact. As for that Top 5 comment-be patient-we should know more in a couple of days because Darrell Arthur-the only Top 5 we are in on is scheduled to name his Final 5-6 this week. So perhaps then it would be more accurate to say we are "in the six-pack" rather than "in the bag".

And you know this because (A) you're close to the staff? Or (B) you get stuff from rivals, which gets its info from the same coaches or from the players (the ones who get a form letter from UT and say Texas is an option -- the same players you chide folks for listening to.) Either way, you're dismissing others' opinions when all you have is just that -- opinions. You get them from different sources. The fact is that unless you're in the coaches' recruiting meetings, you don't know any more than the rest of us. I like to follow this stuff, but I admit that I don't know what Coach Bennett or Coach Stoops or Coach Brown or any other coach thinks. Maybe they like a kid and haven't offered yet because they're waiting on a test score or grades. Maybe there's a kid with great athletic ability but the coaches know he's a "me-first" player who doesn't play for his teammates, or can't make it through school, or .... something else.
None of us -- fans, rivals, insiders, etc. -- know what the coaches know.
