Arthur is nowhere near “in the bag†for SMU. To suggest that it’s a done deal is irresponsible and unfair to Pony fans. We are definitely still in the mix, but I heard UNC leads??
The DMN is reporting that Rivals #100 player, Missouri City guard Dimitri Lott, just picked Texas Tech over over Oklahoma State and Mississippi State. Guess we didn't want him either. To date, only 4 of Rivals Top 100 players have committed to non-BCS schools, the highest being ranked #77. Most are selecting UT, OU, A&M, Ok St and TTech. To argue that we won't likely take any of these players is crazy.
This thread is all messed up. I think the "in the bag" comment was purely a hypothetical as I read it. And I think relating Thornes recruitment to Arthur is off base. We might be holding out hope for a highly rated guard, such as Beal or Sloan (total speculation). If we have a legit chance, those guys are worth waiting for. SMU has recruited guards pretty well, so I dont worry much about a guy like Thorne going elsewhere. If we dont land anybody higher than #25 in Texas at the guard spot, I guess everyone can blow up about Thorne going to Colorado. In the meantime, so what. Thorne is a nice recruit but its still very early for basketball recruiting. Many top players have not verballed yet. Although I admit, I'd be more anxious about Thorne if he was big guy. We've had alot more trouble finding quality frontcourt players, especially locally.
Glad you asked. He went from:
To:
In other words, after finding out the player went elsewhere, he went from "we are not recruiting him at all" to "we were not really recruiting him hard" after somebody suggested SMU not recruiting the number 23 player in the state was preposterous.
Jt, supposedly coaches are not, by NCAA rules, allowed to talk about who they are recruiting. Therefore almost all of us really don't know, nor do we know why certain players may not be recruited such as having academic problems or, in SMU's case just not good enough grades/SAT scores, etc. Therefore it is very possible we were not recruiting the number 23 player. Also, I believe we have only one scholly left to give and supposedly we are hot on the number 1 player. If indeed as everyone seems to think we are not going to get number 1 why would we drop down to number 23 as our next pick. We may actually have fall back players we are recruiting that are better...I certainly don't know, but neither do these folks who say it is preposterous that we aren't recruiting number 23. Edited to reflect Arthur at #1 instead of #5 per Hoop Fan. 8/9/05
Not nitpicking, PK. Do you really think we were not recruiting this guy from our own backyard? A guy who fits the whole reason Tubbs was hired? Stallion's initial post said we "offered" which sounds to me like we were recruiting him. You know, for all Stallion's ranting on this board, the one thing I will not dispute is one of his posts on recruiting--he seems to be on top of that stuff.
jt, I dont see the big difference in what he said. But if we are quibbling, you said Tubbs outta be fired if he wasnt recruiting the #23 player in Texas. Did you mean that? Over one player? If I'm not mistaken, all four of the guys Tubbs signed last year would have met, exceeded or been equivalent to a Texas top 25 player, ie Dwight Thorne. Even the much maligned Bamba Fall. Some rankings had Fall top 150 nationally.
Tubbs has a shot at the #1 (Arthur), 3 (Sloan) , 4 (Beal), 13 (Lewis), 18 (Odufuwa) players in Texas. Sloan, Beal and Lewis are guards. If he swings and misses on all of them, I'll be disappointed, but I won't fry him over letting Dwight Thorne get away, cmon. We have Dez Willingham and Derrick Roberts at guard for 3 more years. Looking at the roster, I think we can afford to and should take a chance to see if we can get a Sloan, Beal or Lewis in here. Thats just good strategy.
jt, get off of the Stallion bandwagon as ALL he knows is what he reads on Rivals. He doesn't know anything about recruiting other than what anybody could read if they want to subscribe to Rivals for $9.95 per month.
