Great first game

Postby Dukie » Sat Nov 09, 2013 8:39 am

Would have been a far bigger spread but for Frazier's first-game nerves and that statistically unlikely string of three TCU treys mid-first-half, which gave them confidence that carried to the end. Frogs fought hard and SMU put them away with superior talent and hustle. I particularly liked the floor-diving after loose balls, which is a good indicator of coaching expectations.

i thought Frazier did a great job of fitting in and letting things come to him. He will only get better. Nic Moore is great. Cannen looked great, so did Manual. Moreira was as advertised. This is going to be a fun team. Moody is gonna rock when Uconn and Louisville come calling.

I think it was Moreira first game nerves not Frazier. Moreira went 1-6 from the field. Frazier added a needed spark when he came in the game and has passion. As Moreira settles down I believe he will shot better.

Read the first nine paragraphs of the DMN game story, including all the quotes from LB and Frazier. It's going to be hard for Frazier not to feel the pressure of high expectations. If anyone can manage though, it's Coach Brown. He'll be fine.

I do agree Moreira struggled at times but IMO that was about finishing strong in crowded spaces rather than nerves.

I was at the game and I think Frazier was fine. No expectation when you don't start imo. Which might be why LB did not start him. The reason Moreira may not have finished strong in crowed places is because he was a nit nervous and did not use good fundamentals in those situations. But that is what first games are for to workout kinks. We just happened to have a first game against a rival and not a real cupcake to fine tune some things. GO SMU.

as coach Brown said in post game, our opening schedule is pretty tough, facing your rival, then a good RI squad that whipped us last year, then a road game to Arkansas...these guys will have to take it up a notch to avoid an ugly start.

our bigs turned it over 8 times...yikes! was impressed that Cunningham appears to have accepted his role and came off the bench to provide a spark and put up some numbers in the few minutes he got. We are going to have a lot of 15-20 minute guys on this roster

Agree. Kennedy had stone hands all night. I have seen him play and never thought that before, so hopefully just off night.

Great first game I think not. Very nervous looking team that was seemingly clueless when TCU went into a zone. I know it will get better but this was another fairly sloppy game like so often happened last year only the talent should overcome it this year for the most part like last night.

With respect--you need to adjust your expectations. This is in many ways a young team, certainly a team with very little competitive playing experience together. They did GREAT considering those things. The patience and passing were what you want to break down a zone. The offball movement wasn't perfect but see the first sentence above.

Not sure how you would put anything on Frazier. He did as well as he could. I was impressed he jumped right in.

Issue was our bigs not finding a handle on the ball, and a short stretch of not enough passing in second half.

Actually, Frazier played a very good game until he took a shot to the "twins"

He was 4-7 (11points) overall and 3-5 from three point and the 3rd leading scorer with only 18 of play. I would say that is a pretty good line.
