Per DMN, SMU Must Win Out To Go To Bowlhttp://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com ... ardy.html/
Something about too many teams are going to be bowl eligible this year. I cannot remember the exact rule, but maybe a 6-6 team can only go to a bowl game as long as no 7-5 teams or better have been shut out? Would be a bummer to upset either Houston or UCF and still get shut out if this guy knows what he is talking about. Probaly won't happen...BUT...maybe it will!!
Re: Per DMN, SMU Must Win Out To Go To BowlFirst you look at Conference bids though. I thought we had 5 bowls + BCS. Last time I looked AAC wasn't going to be able to fill bowl quota even if Rutgers, as expected, becomes bowl eligible. That would leave one more spot I thought

Re: Per DMN, SMU Must Win Out To Go To BowlYes, we have 5 + BCS.
New York Charlotte Birmingham Orlando St. Petersburg BCS We should be fine if we win 6.

Re: Per DMN, SMU Must Win Out To Go To BowlUCF and UH will slaughter us
Re: Per DMN, SMU Must Win Out To Go To Bowlno, there just may be too many eligible BCS teams to fill all of the BCS league allocations.
usually, most BCS leagues are over-bowled (not enough teams to fill their slots). So a few of those become available to the non-BCS better teams. 6-6 may not guarantee us a bid to an AAC bowl, and there will be 7-5+ teams any BCS leftovers would take over us... RIGHT NOW, there are 5 teams in the AAC above us. The AAC has 6 bowls available. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_ ... Conference If we go 6-6 and beat USF, that knocks them out, we have tie vs. Memphis, but don't think that matters. Right now, I think 6-6 gets us a bid. American Athletic Standings TEAM CONF OVERALL * - UCF 4-0 7-1 * - Louisville 4-1 8-1 * - Cincinnati 4-1 7-2 * - Houston 4-1 7-2 Rutgers 2-2 5-3 Southern Methodist 2-2 3-5 South Florida 2-2 2-6 Memphis 0-4 2-6 x - Connecticut 0-4 0-8 x - Temple 0-5 1-8 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_ ... Conference Big12 will likely fill all their slots (7) Big10 has 8 slots with 7 eligible, and 4 still alive. Probably fills them. SEC has 10 slots, and 8 eligible, with 4 still alive. Might lose 1 bowl here. Pac12 has 7 slots, and 8 eligible, with 2 alive. Might steal a slot. MWC has 6 slots, with 3 eligible, and 6 alive. Probably lose a slot or two. CUSA has 7 slots, with 6 eligible, and 3 alive (3-6, 5-5, 4-5). Might lose one slot. ACC has 9 slots, with 6 eligible, and 7 alive. Probably fill their slots. MAC has 3 slots, and 6 eligible, with 1 alive. Fill their slots. Ex: A 9-3 Mac team may look better than a 6-6 SMU for an "unfilled" slot. I didn't go into whether each conferences "alive" team(s) plays each other and cross-eliminates, etc. Example: Illiniois is alive at 3-6, but plays Ohio State this weekend. So they aren't alive for long.

I simply cannot understand this mentality. Don't get it.
Re: Per DMN, SMU Must Win Out To Go To BowlTexas St is an example of a team which might lose a bowl opportunity because of the number of bowl eligible teams. Sun Belt has only 2 bowl spots. CUSA has 7 spots so for example UTSA would be better off than Texas St even if both were bowl eligible with same record

Re: Per DMN, SMU Must Win Out To Go To Bowl
We play UCF and Houston each year...it's not like Rutgers and Cincy which we had never played against before and we almost beat them. UCF and Houston can be wins.

OK you just said yesterday that I was "crazy" if I thought we could beat either UCF or UH and our season was over. "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
