TCU 360: TCU swim and dive earns first win against SMU in program history

By Kim Burdi

Defeating crosstown rival Southern Methodist University on Wednesday night was a fairytale ending for senior Ryker Saunders.

For the first time in program history, TCU defeated SMU, 177.5-122.5.

Last season, TCU came from behind to put the win in reach but SMU won the last event of the meet by 0.86 seconds.

"This is my fourth year as a Horned Frog and reaching this milestone on the last dual meet against the Mustangs is an amazing experience," Saunders said.

TCU swept the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard individual medley events. ...

Not a football topic. However, this is unacceptable. When I heard this it made me ill. Turner and Hart should be ashamed.

First soccer drops one in the punchbowl and now Men's swimming, losing to TCU? We need to get Water Pony that new pool.

it would be one thing if we let the non-rev sports slip because we were doing so much for football and seeing results on the field like a BCS game.

Since we stink at football, this is totally unacceptable.

One day we will see this for football: "SMU defeats crosstown rival TCU in a blowout 55-10 win in TCU's Amon Carter Stadium"

The day will come when we start beating them regularly.

Depressing at the moment, but more disturbing long term.

Men's and Women's Soccer has eroded from their national rankings and expectations, but Swimming & Diving is even more problematic given our prominence starting in the Fifties through the Nineties. All-Americans, National Champions, Olympians and routine Top Ten Finishes in the NCAAs for our Men and Women Swimmers and Divers are rapidly becoming a only memory.

This season, we lose Duals Meets by Men at TCU and Women at Rice is evidence that our two programs, like soccer, are in death spirals. Given our dated (obsolete) Natatorium, how is it possible to recruit, train and compete in the state of Texas, much less nationally, our historic role in college sports? The prospects for a new Natatorium are dimmer than at any time in the last twenty years. Statements that a replacement is a priority are empty rhetoric without foundation or substance.

I feel for Soccer, as well, but with the right coaches you can imagine a recovery. For Swimming & Diving, the future is probably non-existent. Yes, I am on the ledge.

For all of the Orsini love around here, he sure seems to get a free pass for how much he ignored non-revenue sports. Is any NR sport (other than equestrian which is new) better off now than it was when Orsini was hired?

I had no idea. When I was there, we were an elite soccer and swimming program. Tons of Olympians in swimming. I knew a lot of them - soccer and swimming. And all good people typically and also good in the classroom.

I'm sure WaterPony has stated this multiple times, but how much is needed for the Nat. to be renovated?

It's a shame what has happened to both the soccer and swimming programs. When I was there, we were a national power in soccer and at the very least a regional power in swimming (I know UT has been very good for a long time). Doesn't Hart have the salesman in him to get the money needed to raise the funds or at least enough to sale the renovation to Turner?

Last I checked there is another thread on this board called 'Priorities.' What does that thread say about funding the all-important olympic sports?

Yes, we have financial resources. But considering how much this university is attempting - presidential library, new dorms, name bball coach, brand new school - seems to me we had to 'Prioritize.'

Here's a short term solution - go to SMUmustangs.com RIGHT NOW and donate $20 - even if you've given already this year. Then come back to the board and say anything you've got to say.

Before the Memphis game I asked Hart about a new Natatorium and an IPF. He said they needed a lead donor to come through before proceeding with the Natatorium (don't remember the $ amount he mentioned). He also said they are still in the process of raising the money needed to fully fund the Moody renovation. I inferred from the conversation that paying off Moody had a higher priority than the Natatorium or IPF. (SID, if you are reading, please correct me if I am wrong.)

Hart talked around my question about football recruiting, which I understand. On the other topics I thought he was a straight shooter, as well as a nice guy with a realistic vision for the athletic department.

Soccer has decent enough facilities or at least not nearly as dated as swimming. A coach is a lot easier to replace than a facility.

SMU leadership is destroying some of our athletic legacy by not addressing critical needs. But this also reflects a failure of making our revenue sports, football particularly, which subsidize our other sports, competitive relevant and more financially productive.
