I swear to God our marketing department has their heads completely up their asses 95% of the time.
If you're going to unveil alternate helmets, make them cool as [deleted] (chrome, weird facemask color, whatever) and promote the hell out of them. Tomorrow will be Friday and no one knows what they look like yet. They should've been on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. on MONDAY promoting the game and the alternate helmets.
Seriously, just hire me to co-run the athletic department with Rick. I'll work for half of his salary.

The unveiling of the throwback uniforms was horrid as well, and that was a cool idea. It was like a Microsoft Paint mockup of the jersey that they put out to fans to get us "excited." They should have had Kenneth Acker, Randall Joyner, and Gottshalk modeling those things (no homo) the week before the game on social media

Re: Mustangs to unveil new look
I don't know what the wrapped them with, but we put my son in one of those ridiculous infant helmets when he was 9mo old to fix his flat head. We had it wrapped in graphics from the same stuff they put on cars. The stuff is super sticky and heavy (still have the helmet). They use a razor blade to trim the stuff and around holes. If it is high quality vinyl wrap it will not come off during play.DanFreibergerForHeisman wrote:How does it work with the vents in the helmet?SMU404 wrote:I've seen them, its 1/4 [deleted] at best. I have a feeling we are going to be dealing with massive peeling as well. This could be a disaster.
Oh well, just one more potential angle of excitement to the game!

Why? A red helmet will make people want to go to the game? Promote the game, yes. Promote a red helmet? Laughable.East Coast Mustang wrote: They should've been on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. on MONDAY promoting the game and the alternate helmets.

Red Helmets with the blue jerseys were the Hayden Fry look. For one game, it would be okay. I didn't like the red helmets because they looked like Arkansas helmets back in that era.

Re: Mustangs to unveil new look
If SMU is going to do this, as a Marketing Dept, put some freaking effort into it - or don't do it at all.
*First - make sure it looks good. Ask Nike/Schutt to design for us. If they cannot/will not, then fine, we are on our own. But get in done in advance so that you have the proper time to test quality, publicize, market, etc. And make sure whatever you are using does not peel off during practice. Make it LOOK GOOD! This is exciting stuff, why be so mysterious about it?
*Second - Create quality marketing for your product. As great as the 1983 throwbacks idea was, the execution stank. One photoshop markup that looked like a 6 yr old did it was used on social media and the website. And then some pictures of names getting sewn on the jerseys. That was it. To give you an example, the red mockup in the post above is 100x better than what we did for the throwback rollout. Most teams have a PC for new jerseys, or the school releases pictures of players wearing them. It should be a fun way to market your team. Don't decide 3 days before a game that we are doing this.
If you don't prepare, how can you execute? It just screams "small time program" when we do stuff like this.
*******Here's an idea for next year SID or Rick Hart (if you're reading this)******
If we have a game that falls on Veteran's Day weekend, which we should, then replace our regular red pony on the white helmet with an American Flag pony. That should be relatively cheap - I mean, we have those stickers in the bookstore.
Create a "stars and stripes" jersey that features our normal colors (red/white/blue), but instead of having our player's names on the backs, it just says "Honor" or "Service" or "Sacrifice", etc. It will not be a waste of money, because we can use these for every Veteran's Day weekend game each player has for the next 4-5 years. Bottom line - we can get more than one use out of them.
Simple. Easy. Cool. Patriotic. Cheap. Fun. What more do you need?

I think this would be a great alternate uniform. I basically like the simplicity of it, but on the other hand it might need a big SMU on the front like the blue jerseys have. Maybe the originator of this version could do a mock-up to see what it would look like.Treadway21 wrote:We'd all be happy with this red look.SMUer wrote:

SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

YES!!! The gloves so make the uniform! !feelthehorsepower wrote:This is possibly the best away uniform I have ever seen. It would be cool if we could get the gloves that show the Mustang when you put the hands together!.ponyinNC wrote:I'd like to know who designs these or picks these designs.
Red helmets? Not sure anyone (EVER!) has suggested red helmets. My guess is that AD office has heard our alternate uniform/helmet requests, but found that the cheapest option is a plain red helmet (as opposed to chrome) with our blue jerseys from the RU game - rather than commissioning Nike to actually design something cool.
I get it - it's all about $. But not sure I've ever seen any poster on here or on other sites suggest a red helmet - unless it was the plain red from the way, way way old days.
Let's not p*ssyfoot around here. Blue jersey are great with white helmets. Old school PE look.
Alternate shoudl be regualr jersey with chrome helmet (sponsored by Ford Motors!).
The best version I've ever seen were the mockups on pf.com.

I'm just waiting for the next announcement to be something like our field will be "Red" like Eastern Washington.
What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.

I like it. Giant white lettering on a plain red jersey would be awesome. It would be in such contrast to all the tricked out uniforms it would be cool. NO STRIPES!PK wrote:I think this would be a great alternate uniform. I basically like the simplicity of it, but on the other hand it might need a big SMU on the front like the blue jerseys have.
