Synopsis of thoughts on the game?

Postby ponyboy » Sun Nov 17, 2013 10:24 pm

I had to attend an out of town event and caught most of the game on the radio sitting in my car. What are the overall ponyfans thoughts on the game? Seemed we gave UConn too much of a chance to stay in the game. Should I be worried?

By the way, I'd really appreciate it if we could keep the cute and cutting remarks to a minimum. Honest and fair reflections on the game please.

We got up 21-7, let them back in with some shoddy D, but closed the door when it mattered.

Special teams were much improved.

Gilbert took quite a few hits, still had a very solid day.

K.C. looked great in 4th quarter prompting another round of "why isn't he starting."

The red helmets looked great. The red jerseys look like crap. Together, they muted any significance with the helmet, and we looked like a cheap Houston knockoff. But the helmets looked good.

Crowd sucked, but we've seen worse at Ford within the last five years.

I think we saw the first true Run N' Shoot TD drive: 2 short underneath routes that totaled about 80 yards with 65 yards after catch in less than 40 seconds.

Defense leaks like a sieve. It cannot get a stop when it needs it, it cannot force a fourth down stop, and Chris Parks looks utterly lost out there. Given that he remains a starter, it does not speak highly of CB depth behind him. Outside of a few times towards the beginning of the game, we managed to generate very little pressure, especially when we only rushed our three down linemen.

Loftus isn't our placekicker anymore (old news). Loftus isn't our punter anymore (new news). Rolling with a combo of Gilbert/Hover for punts.

Darius Joseph hurt his shoulder.

The ESPN3 announcers are really, really, really bad.

Since you didn't get a chance to watch the game...

My lasting impressions from this game (and I have been drinking all day so my memory might be a little fuzzy - NFL tailgating all day) were that this was a game of momentum. Our offense was not great, but their defense seemed to carry the momentum in the second half. Their offense was very poor, so our defense stood tall until we started playing soft to protect the lead.

Standout players for SMU:
1) Keenan Holman had a good game. Don't know his stats, but made a bunch of key plays.
2) Stephan Sanders had a pick 6 that iced the game
3) the d line played fairly well. UConn made a point a couple of times to pound the rock. Most of the time the D was up to the challenge. Until they decided to play soft, the D Line kept the UConn offense in check.

The game was very much in doubt until mid way through the 4th qtr.

Sorry you missed the game... It is always a shame to miss a win.

First game all season I can remember all season that we did not have a penalty on kickoff returns which was a HUGE improvement.

Was surprised at how much pressure their D-line was able to put on Gilbert.

Not that it should be a surprise at this point in the season, but they were able to run the ball much more effectively than I felt they should have been able to.

Anybody care to give out grades?

OLINE: B Not bad for the most part, but GG got hit more than he should
QB: A- Gilbert had a good game overall as usual, but for some reason (at least to me) he looked slower on his reads and seemed to lock in on receivers at times.
RBs: C+ Nlemchi did well, Prescott only so-so. KC needs to be on the field a lot more
WRs: A- Slow start, but overall pretty solid
DLINE: B+ Looked better and got pretty good push
LBs: C our run defense is terrible, but we got to the QB a few times
SECONDARY: C- as bad as our run D is, our pass is worse
SPECIAL TEAMS: C no huge returns, but no bone headed mistakes either. Loftus can't find consistency with his punts with a map and compass.

Look at it this way, with the exception of a handful of plays we played even with an 0-9 team. You can assign the grades you think are appropriate.

I challenge that our victory over Tulane, Homecoming 2011 felt longer. Time went backwards in that game.

Really? With the exception of the first quarter I thought the game moved along quite well. I think it was a sub 3:30 game.
