Not sure exactly what the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is, but Garrett Gilbert and Jeremy Johnson are among semifinalists.

The SMU offensive tandem takes two of 16 spots on list

TYLER, Texas (SMU) – SMU senior quarterback Garrett Gilbert and senior wide receiver Jeremy Johnson are two of the 16 players that have been named Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award semifinalists, the award committee announced on Tuesday.

Fans can vote for Gilbert and Johnson for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award online.

The nation’s leader in total offense/game this season (409.4), Gilbert has led the nation’s 20th-most proficient offense to 484.3 yards per game in 2013. Gilbert also ranks second in completions per game (35.38), third in passing yards per game (379.6) and 13th in points responsible for per game (17.8 ). Among NCAA active career leaders, Gilbert is ninth in passing yards (9270), ninth in total offense (10254), fourth in pass attempts (1473), seventh in completions (856) and fifth in total offensive plays (1760). In 2013, Gilbert has broken school records for single-game passing yards (538 vs. Temple), completions (45 vs. Rutgers), pass attempts (70 vs. Rutgers), TDs responsible for (7 vs. Rutgers), total offensive plays (81) and total offense (635 vs. Temple). The total offense record of 635 yards is the seventh-highest single-game total in NCAA history.

Johnson has had a career-season, already doubling his career yardage number with four games to go in 2013. Against Rutgers, Johnson tied the SMU record with 18 receptions in a game for a school-record 217 yards. Johnson also has the SMU record for 10+ reception games with six. The Preseason All-American Athletic Conference Third Team selection is also second on SMU’s season list with 87 receptions. The Tyler, Texas, native is currently fourth in the NCAA in receptions per game with 9.4 and is 13th in receiving yards per game with 106.8.

Finalists will be announced on Dec. 9, and the winner will be announced at an award banquet in Tyler, Texas, on Jan. 10.

With three games remaining in the regular season, the 4-5 Mustangs will travel to Tampa, Fla., to take on 2-7 USF on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT on ESPN3.

NOOOO! Hover got named as a semi-finalist for an award and he shanked two critical FG's the next game! We can't have Gilbert and JJ hit by the awards list curse. Nonetheless, I will vote for both as many times as allowed. :)
