Re: Creek under the natatorium?Absolutely fascinating. Incidental to this conversation is this talk given by former UP Mayor Coffee. In it, he discusses the history of SMU quite a bit.

Re: Creek under the natatorium?
I trace my direct line to the Daniel family about 7 generations back to Tennessee. One of the Daniels was a widow and sister of my ancestors who came to Dallas on Christmas Eve 1845 by wagon. I have about 5 relatives buried in that Daniels cemetary near campus-My direct relatives settled a little to the West and started Cochran's Chapel near present day Northwest Highway and Webb's Chapel which also has one of the most important pioneer cemetaries. If you are descendants from early pioneers of Texas there is a book that is now on line which was written by a -------Brown in which he basically canvassed the names and description of every early settlor of Dallas County. Here's is one chapter from that book which indexes the early settlors of Dallas County-check and see of your ancestors are listed. http://freepages.history.rootsweb.ances ... tlers.html the Key to the Daniels Cemetary used to be kept by Jay Daniels at the old Daniel Laundry and Drycleaners just to the West of the cemetary on Hillcrest. Plenty of Daniels still around Dallas as I've run into 3-4 branches of the family. Here's a old newspaper article about the Daniels family: http://www.cemeteries-of-tx.com/etx/dal ... aniel.html Last edited by Stallion on Thu Nov 21, 2013 11:34 am, edited 5 times in total.

Re: Creek under the natatorium?I have no idea about the creek. But I do know there is a number of tunnels under the whole campus. You can walk from one side to the other using the tunnels.
Re: Creek under the natatorium? How did we ever come from this to what we are today? It's saddening.

Re: Creek under the natatorium?Wow, was that SMU? A stadium full and school pride everywhere. The small school syndrome certainly didn't hold us back then. I looked it up, and that was the year SMU beat Oh. State and SMU had the #1 ranking after that game. Night and day from today.
Re: Creek under the natatorium?
Not quite the same anal landscaping we have today! Two questions maybe someone can answer: What building is this: ![]() And when did SMU stop having wild bonfires!? ![]() "I think Couchem is right."

Re: Creek under the natatorium?
Wow, I had never seen that video. I have seen old pictures of the campus, but that video really makes it come to life. Love it!

I WANT TO DO TUG OF WAR OVER THE MAIN FOUNTAIN SOOOOOOO BAD NOW. Also, when did they change the fountain? This video is absolutely awesome. BOP - Providing insensitivity training for a politically correct world since 1989.
Re: Creek under the natatorium? There are a lot of interesting pics on SMU's digital collection. Here is a 1917 picture of unspecified campus location. Very interesting.
URL format freaks out the board so I did a screenshot ![]() "I think Couchem is right."

Wow....so many amazing things.... - crazy awesome spirit displays built by the frats for their houses - the SMU homecoming parade was in DOWNTOWN DALLAS?! - lots of card stunts in the crowd at the Cotton Bowl ![]()
Re: Creek under the natatorium? Not nearly as cool as the other one but this has color video of campus from 1939 http://digitalcollections.smu.edu/all/cul/bim/stream/admn_1939_promo_stream.html

Re: Creek under the natatorium?
That's amazing, Stallion. Did not know that. Watch that video I posted above as Mayor Coffee talks a lot about the Daniels family, how they for instance planted bois d'arcs to keep their animals on the property in and other animals out. I'm impressed you've got Daniels blood. You're about as old an SMU guy as imaginable. Last edited by ponyboy on Thu Nov 21, 2013 3:30 pm, edited 1 time in total.
