Re: Disappointing Win?
I thought it was a good win. We lost our best player and the rest of the team picked it up. D was better except of one play in the second half. THe O changed to incorporate more running and shifted to short quick passes. ANd it was effective.
The one punt really sucked.
WE drastically decreased our penalties. Imagine the game if we had our usual 12 or so penalties.
No doubt USF is a struggling team. If we were going to have significant adversity like losing GG then the best opponent for that is USF.
And the team got a half to discover a new level they can step up to when faced with adversity.
We have a tough challenge next week.

Re: Disappointing Win?
All I will say about USF is that they managed to beat Cincinnati which is a pretty nice win (despite not scoring an offensive touchdown). We lost Gilbert before the half on the road against a team with some pretty nice pieces on defense and found a way to win. That was a game we'd have likely lost last season.
If I'm SMU I might seriously consider sitting Gilbert against Houston and seeing if he can possibly be ready for the last game of the season against UCF. Without Gilbert we have zero chance of beating UCF.

Back off Warchild seriously.

Maybe not having Gilbert will cause this staff to scramble to come up with a comprehensive game plan, and we'll come out looking really great a la Hawaii...

Re: Disappointing Win?
I watched the game and saw a QB come off the bench, cold and without the anticipation he would get into the game and lead our team to 2 touchdowns and win the game. Does he match Gilbert? No. Gilbert was and probably still is leading the nation in total offense. Would I like Gilbert to be back and play the last 2 games? Yes, but I doubt that happens. But to come on here and degrade a player's football knowledge when I am pretty sure your little self never played in a D-1 football game, without even knowing the player, and observing an interception, which by the way even the greatest QBs of all time do on occasion is debasing and totally uncalled for.SMU_Alumni11 wrote:Just watch the game, he doesn't think before he throws which is evidenced by his performance during the game where he threw couple of times into enemy's hands. GG's int was a WR's error of bobbling into the defender's hands. I figure people would use a common sense approach to when someone says "smarts" in the context of football. Just in case, I'm not referring to one's SAT scores or his physical appearance. You are correct that he needs preparation and I make that concurring opinion by my "judgement."

Preach it, Mrydel.
When GG left the game right before halftime and it was 3-0, I thought we were in a world of trouble. Neal wasn't Johnny Unitas but he put 13 points on the board in the second half, made a gutsy throw on that 4th and 1 TD strike to Der'Rikk, and sealed the win. Can't ask for much more from a Freshman backup QB.
I hate that GG is sidelined and may not be able to play vs UH and possibly UCF, but these reps and experience that Burcham will get are invaluable as he takes over the reins in 2014

No such thing as a disappointing win. Neal getting a chance to play and win may be the best thing for this team long term.

Uh huh, I think you are taking my comments a little to the extreme. All I'm saying is that he doesn't have the "raw" smarts to play yet. It's not like I'm saying from now and forever more this guy will be stupid. I'm saying as of right now, he is a shoot and throw kind of person (lacking the "smarts/wisdom/experience) of what to do in a game. This shoot and throw happen not only in the game but some in the AM game as well. I want him to develop and take notes in what Gilbert has accomplish from start to finish. So I'm not really sure what busting your hip over my comment but I'll just chalk up to your misunderstanding of my comment.mrydel wrote:I watched the game and saw a QB come off the bench, cold and without the anticipation he would get into the game and lead our team to 2 touchdowns and win the game. Let's instead chalk it up to your comment being stupid.

11 - you are a great fan - but when you get a bit older you will realize when you screw up and push send before thinking it through, it is better to just admit you screwed up and move on. Defending it doesn't work. On to the next subject

Re: Disappointing Win?
Good Lord kid. How do you know how much Burcham knows? He has been playing since he was a little kid. What in the world are "raw" smarts? He did play in games before. He has been with us for 2 years. Please do not keep trying to justify the fact you said he had no football smarts. Make an educated statement like the fact that he cannot deliver a sideline throw with the velocity that Gilbert can at this stage of his development. We have been watching a QB with professional skill for the past 2 years. Not many schools can say that. Anyone we have coming in will most likely pale in arm comparison to Gilbert at least early in their development. But calling a kid not smart based on his first performance in an unscheduled debut. Coupled with the fact he led us to our only 2 tds is just dumb.SMU_Alumni11 wrote:Uh huh, I think you are taking my comments a little to the extreme.
