Darrell Colbert / Houston Lamar Game

Postby Dairy Crampus » Sun Nov 24, 2013 9:10 am

I thought I'd post this since there are some great quotes in this article. Looks like Colbert will feel right at home at SMU - as Lamar switched from Blue to Red uniforms at halftime in their victory over Taylor. Walker two big catches. Believe I'll swing by the second half of the Friday's Lamar (10-0)/Pearland(11-1) match-up after the UH game next Friday. Reliant to Mercer about 30 mins.

Lamar comes alive in second half to rout Alief Taylor

Lamar went with a wardrobe change at halftime, switching from blue tops to red ones.

Then it closed the curtains on Alief Taylor's season in the third quarter.

Quarterback Darrell Colbert directed touchdown drives on Lamar's first two possessions after the break, and the defense held the Lions' explosive offense to 118 yards in a 36-0 win Saturday at Delmar Stadium.

"(Lamar coach Tom Nolen) said we came out here in the blue jerseys, now it's time to get bloody," running back Ronnie Wesley said.

Taylor's season ends at 8-4.

Lamar (10-0) advances to the Class 5A Division I Region III semifinals to face Pearland (11-1) at 1 p.m. Friday at Mercer Stadium.

For Colbert, that matchup can't come soon enough.

"It's pretty personal for me," he said. "My sophomore year, that's the team that knocked us out of the playoffs.

"So we're going to be ready for them come Friday."

Neither team was ready to go Saturday.

Sloppy start

They combined for six punts on the first six possessions before the Redskins went to the air to jump start their offense.

Shelby Walker hauled in consecutive passes of 26 and 53 yards to set up Ronnie Wesley's 1-yard TD run for a 6-0 lead with 2:32 left in the first quarter.

Then, 10 seconds later, Trevion Duncan intercepted Remi Olonade and took it 36 yards for a 13-0 advantage.

And, really, that was all Lamar needed.

"Tre Duncan made a big play and so did Darrell, and it really turned the tide for us," Nolen said. "After that, we played pretty well."

Colbert played particularly well after the slow start, keeping the Redskins' offense moving despite Taylor doing a good job on Wesley, who rushed for 32 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

Lamar had just 95 yards on 36 rushes.

But Colbert completed 15 of 27 passes for 217 yards and two TDs, throwing into a cold, gusty wind all afternoon.

"We think we can do both of them equally well, or that's our goal, and so whichever one seems to go that night we can go with," Nolen said.

Defense carries load

Taylor punted nine times. It would have punted 11, but it faked one, which didn't work, and it had another erased by a roughing-the-kicker penalty.

The Lions managed only 5 yards on the ground.

"They're a good team," Taylor coach J.D. Jordan said. "That's why they played in the state championship last year."

Olonade, who suffered what Jordan called turf toe four minutes into the game, was 8-of-32 passing for 75 yards. Romello Brooker had one reception - on a pass from fellow receiver Keenen Brown.

"We have a real good defense," Colbert said. "There are probably seven D-I guys on our defense.

"Our defense is amazing.

Amazing defense. I team in 2 years has done anything against them-but Allen gashed them pretty good. Good to see Shelby Walker show up. He had only 12 receptions and 2 TDs on year. As Lamar goes deeper in playoffs I think they'll have to open up their conservative offense more.

What position will Colbert play at SMU? Does he get a shot at QB with Harris decommitting, or is he strictly an athlete that will be converted into a RB/WR/DB?

He was recruited a QB, could change down the road but if June is still here then Colbert will at least get a shot to play QB.

So why all the Houston Lamar recruits? We have better teams and QBs here inside the actual City of Dallas.

Didn't we recruit Houston Kashmere (sp?) similarly to Lamar during the 80s? Not saying the two are comparable. Just asking.

Colbert got rave reviews at Elite 11 and from our main man Trent Dilfer:

One of Dilfer's favorites, Houston (Texas) Lamar quarterback Darrell Colbert Jr., an undersized SMU pledge who was one of the top performers on the weekend, wants to have a few final words and ends up receiving some more coaching in the bargain.

"Junior Junior," as Dilfer calls the reigning state champion, has a tendency to sink deep into his drop when he hits his fifth step. A stickler for such details, Dilfer talks about loading his front leg on his fourth step to kill all that backwards momentum so that Colbert can be more ready to deliver the pass when he hits the final step of his drop.

Colbert punctuates the teaching points with nods of his head or "yessirs," his focus intense as he greedily soaks up the information.

In the moment, it's easy to see why Dilfer likes the coachable Colbert so much as a player -- he works hard to maximize his potential and overcome the limitations imposed by his lack of prototypical size for the position.

Dilfer warns him that the muscles he uses in that front leg to slow his drop will be sore and that it will take a couple weeks before he feels comfortable. Colbert merely smiles, ready for the pain because it will be a sign of progress.

The lesson is punctuated by a few demonstrations from Dilfer, who claims that his daughter can throw a better ball than he can now, though it only takes a couple of throws before the ball is jumping from his hand once again, as befitting a former NFL quarterback.

Colbert also won the golden gun award for accuracy in the Elite 11 camp.

I hated to lose Harris - but Colbert could do big things here.

Mobile QB may be just what we need in the future depending on our offensive scheme (should JJ no longer coach).

Always have been a fan of dilfer since he played college ball in my hometown. I think the elite 11 camps are awesome and having dilfer rave about burcham and Colbert is a great thing.

Wondering why no P5 schools saw all this potential in Burcham and Colbert.

Colbert is only 5"10 or so - that could be a reason.

Burcham did have a Cincy offer when they were P5, FWIW.

Harris' incredible offer list was a bit of a smokescreen - most of those SEC offers were non-committable (bama, UK, MSU). His real choices were all AAC schools - SMU, USF, UCF.

Arkansas wanted Burcham. Most other schools pulled off of him when he tore up his knee.

I was at the State Championship last year against Allen and I was very impressed with Colbert. He reminded me a lot of Russell Wilson, short qb, accurate, but also very mobile. The one thing that stood out to me was his toughness. He took an absolute beating in the game
