SMU Nike Pro Combat Retro Jerseys (Revised) Doak, Levias, ED

Post by SMU1523 »

I have been dabbling with concepts in the Basketball forum. In one of the threads, I received a request for a Jerry Levias retro mockup. I seem to be getting positive reception with my concepts, so I hope you all are not sick of me posting them.

If I was in charge of the uniforms, I would make the Dickerson era retro concept the everyday jerseys (I did a mockup of a red one, but decided not to include it). The Pony Express jerseys are classic and the most recognizable images of the success we had during the 1980's. We were fast, powerful, and dominant. I would argue these uniforms are the most timeless uniforms we have, but yet they still have a very modern feel.

I would bring back the Doak and Levias uniforms for special games (ex. Homecoming). These uniforms are very much a part of our history. Doak is SMU's only Heisman trophy winner and Levias was the first African American scholarship football player in the SWC.

I understand that other School's are coming out with flashy jerseys (ex. Oregon and Baylor), but I feel it is better to display our history. Nobody said throwbacks couldn't be flashy. Our rich football history separates us from many schools in NCAA Division 1 FBS. We should be proud to showcase it.

On the Marketing side of things, we are not helping brand recognition by changing our uniforms so frequently. Yes, schools will and should make MINOR changes (ex. Texas adding numbers back to helmet, USC changing stripe pattern) every few seasons, but we have done a uniform overhaul 3 times in the last 10 years. That is unacceptable and crippling to brand recognition. SMU's goal should be creating a national recognizable brand. We can get there, but in our case a good start would be consistency.

Far left to honor Doak

Middle to honor Jerry LeVias

PERFECT in its simplicity, which was the rule back then.

Good Job.

I like the far right (blue) as our default home jersey. The one next to it for away games. Then for special occasion home games switch between the red jersey/helmets, or the middle one. I like all of them...wish we could have em all!

Never been a fan of the fly pattern on the shoulders (or whatever it's called) but these are awesome.

I was working off of the Fly Pattern template when I did the original concepts a couple of years ago. It isn't my favorite either, but since I have built most of my graphics based off of this template it was easier not to change it.

Great job '1523!!! Great job w/ the school colors too.

Until the last one it's all SMU.
BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

I used a psd template from deviant art. I then built the assets in Adobe Illustrator and dropped them into Adobe Photoshop.
