Lame duck coach ending a disappointing season vs a coaching legend trending up with a massive slope. Mourning vs excitement.

Really? A relevant team with a coach that gets it vs a perennial middle of the pack performer who doesn't do the basics (recruit). I will be in Frisco watching the relevant national team, vs getting our teeth kicked in at home. Gilbert healthy might change my mind, but i don't think that is happening, since this whole season was only to get him a pro shot - and he aint going to risk making that knee worse.

Not disagreeing with any of that but I still stand by my post. There are 30 bball games and this one is hofstra OOC. This is the last football game, senior day, etc, I just think the thread demonstrates the challenge faced by SMU and the reason why moving onto a bigger and better conference is extremely unlikely. If the diehards would rather watch hoops vs hofstra then you might as well give up on the football program. Just my observations as an outsider...obviously you guys can do what you want. I am hoping to attend the game vs UCF.

No you pretty well nailed it in both posts. Its a little too much to ask an SMU fan to commit to showing up on 6 Saturdays every year.

So what. We pay for the tickets. We will go when it is fun and won't if it is not. I need my coach and administration to care about what i care about. When that happens then I will be a die hard. Until then we are all rearranging deck chairs.

It says more about what our most die hard fans think about the two coaches. One works hard and appreciates the school and tradition and works hard to establish a relationship with the fans the other not much. A lot of potential good will has been used up over the last few years and that affects how the fans see the programs' relative value in time and money.

I for one will be at the Fball game, but I can see why some people would rather spend their time and money to reward a coach that is pushing SMU back on the national scene.

Choosing SMU Hoops over SMU football >>>>>>> Choosing OU/Texas over TCU football.

I will be driving up from Houston to watch SMU v UCF. I would not drive up to watch a non-conference basketball game v Hofstra even if we were a top ten team right now and I like basketball much more than football.

Fair enough, but this mistake shouldn't have happened in the first place. I'd buy it if it was 2003 rather than 2013. But now that start times are completely dependent upon TV, schools need to schedule with more care.

PonyFans is where you go, when you love your Mustangs but also feel you need a good shaming.

Meanwhile, the deadbeat alumni don't hear a thing...and live in a blissful ignorance that they are slowly helping to kill this program.

Judging by attendance counts, not enough do.

You can have that attitude, but don't expect other conferences to be impressed.

Nice thought, but I doubt that helps SMU (or any other school striving to join a larger conference).

Show up to the football game to support the seniors who have given their all to represent our school, forget about the coach. Sad that a Frogs fan has to come on here to hold up a mirror to how crappy some of our fans can be.

Hmm now that I think about it I think the official statement would've sounded more contrite if it began with "let me be clear.."
